MG MGA - Judson / Holley carb flooding

I've got a Judson on my MGA. One of the joys up to now has been the Holley carb that comes with it - a two screw adjustment and you're ready to go. Plus the accelerator pump in the carb that gives you that boost when you hit the gas.

But I wouldn't be posting just to make all you SU types jealous ;-)

I had been having flooding problems for the past couple of weeks, and today when I turned on the ignition the clicking didn't stop, followed by a tell-tale gas smell. Checking out the carb with the hood up and ignition on showed gas flooding out the relief valve. Removal and inspection of the float and valves showed no obvious problems, but the problem persists. Not sure if it is the float or check valves.

Anyone else (i.e. Dominic) have experience with these ? If so, any advice on diagnosing / finding parts ?

Thanks
Chuck

Sent a note to George Folchi, who did the rebuild work on my Judson 5 or 6 years ago. He had an answer for me within 5 minutes !

He had the part number for a carb rebuild kit for me (NAPA 25195), which I have ordered from NAPA.

Hopefully that will do the trick !

Thanks again to George.

Hello,

I know a bit about Holley carb. I never saw any MG with holley. But I dealed with 4 barrel Holley in the past on a 4 cyl. It was as far I remember a 390 cfm type with 2 floats to cope with gas. Basically your problem is 2 needle that are frequently faulty. They are cheap in all sense of the term, which mean your never travel without a new pair in the glovebox.

Have a look on e-bay under item
# 400077651158 ( honest cie., I ordered from them) or

# 230371071480

And go to Holley site they provide a good tech procedure how to adjust them.

Cheers,

I forgot,

It is true Holley gave good perf. on my 4 cyl., but yields a low MPG in comparison to SU's.

I have the complete guide on the Holley if you want a copy.

I had similar problems with my first carb, which George replaced when a rebuild didn't do the trick (he's really absolutely the best)

There is a also problem with the so called economiser jet, which wears out and causes this problem. (thats's the small rectangular casting with lots of small tubes and a small needle valve at one end). There is a guy who repairs them, but he's extremely prickly and not particularly "forriner-friendy" (has a tag that is something along the lines of redneck and proud of it.....

Chuck,
Are you the person that has the Judson mated to the 1800? Does that combination give any additional horsepower? Could you PM me for a conversation?

BTW, I may have an extra economizer valve in my Judson parts collection. Let me know if you need one and I can do a search.

If you have parts, I am looking for the four clips that fix the glass float bowl to the carb body - I have the glass, the metal ring and the gasket, but no clips.

Jean,

Thanks for the tips !
The Holley is a 1950s vintage single barrel that mates up with the Judson supercharger. You are right that it looks to be a faulty needle valve. I will keep spares on hand in the future !

James - I have a 1622 like Dominic, I modeled much of my setup after his. I'd be happy to discuss. As a native Minnesotan, I hope we can work through our cultural differences.

Dominic - Thanks again for the help ! I wasn't aware of the "economiser jet". I'll look into that one as well. Is this something I can replace ? I have ordered a "carb kit" from NAPA, which has gaskets, needle valve, float valve seat, etc, but not sure if it covers this as well.

I'll post a reply here after I things running again.

Best regards,

Dominic,
I have been away from the computer for a few days. I believe I have those clips. I will look in the shop today and let you know.

Chuck, Thanks for the response. Badgers and Gophers are both rodents and, as such, basically get along. But Badgers (Packers) hate Vikings.

Dominic,
I have your parts. Could you PM me on the best way to ship them to you so that they don't get rerouted to Africa.
