MG MGA - King DIck Jack on ebay US
Item #40300068958 Would this be appropriate for a 1600 Mk II ? If it goes to $300 US as suggested by the seller, that sounds like quite a bit for some pig iron. What prices have others seen lately ? Thanks, Chuck http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/KING-DICK-JACK-MGA-MG-TD-TF-AUSTIN-HEALEY-NR_W0QQitemZ140300068958QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item140300068958&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=72%3A317%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1308 |

Hi Chuck, That Jack should be OK for your 1600 MK11, but the qustion you should be asking yourself is "do I need a jack to change a wheel or am I going for a prize at a Concours event?" To change a wheel you can find a jack at an auto junkyard for a couple of dollars. If for Concours you could not leave your car unattended, it could go missing in a couple of minutes. Mick |

They are absolutely worthless as a jack. A scissor jack from a junkyard would work much better. I wish I hadn't thrown out two of the dumb things years ago. I could have sold them to some "collector" for a fortune. I dread what the "value" of these worthless artifacts represent. The only purpose these jacks serve is for the owners of "Trailer Queens" to impress each other. Any time I see the pretentious side of car collecting I want to hurl. These cars were made for fun. Let the idle rich impress each other with their other cars. Lets DRIVE ours and ignore the "investment" crap that invades the hobbie. I hope to never see MGAs featured at Pebble Beach. |

The King Dick would not have been original on a MKII. Starting in July 1960 and later, MGA's were shipped with Shelley jacks which seem to be even more rare than the King Dick. I bought a new "King Dick" jack from Moss about 10 Years ago. The one I bought has "King Dick" and the numbers B1077 cast down in the side just like the Ebay pictures. There must be a way to tell it from the original, but from the pictures I can't tell any difference. The Moss part number is 386-900 and lists for $147 now but I only remember paying about $50 for it. Like RJ said, they are not very good jacks and a junkyard scissor jack is much more practical and that is what I normally keep in the boot. PS Like everything else MGA, Barney has a page about jacks on his web site. http://www.mgaguru.com/mgtech/tools/tf130.htm |

I have a much better page for jacks here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/travel/tp102.htm |

This jack type, as I understand, is reproduced and sold by Moss at a fraction of that price. Can anyone confirm how authentic the repro jack is? Neil |

Like Barney, I use a scissor jack for practical day to day wheel changes (not a common occurrence fortunately). As Jeff says, the King Dick is not the original equipment for the 1600 MkII (from chassis number 93548). You need a Shelley LJ225 from that number. As you will have seen from Barney's link there are many varieties of the LJ225, but only one type is correct for the MGA. You may also want to look at my bit on all Shelley Jacks as I have kept track of Ebay selling prices: http://www.mgaroadster.co.uk/shelley_jacks.htm The King Dick you are looking at on Ebay was supplied with late 1500s and 1600s up to Chassis number 93548. I am still hoping that someone can narrow down the chassis number for the change-over from the LJ23 used in early 1500s to the King Dick. Steve |
