MG MGA - m/c assembly

Can someone tell me which way does the "valve cup" fit?
See pic. Is the closed end towards the front of the m/c?

Art Pearse

Yes, it is shaped to fit inside the valve body.

or to put it another way, the open side of the cup faces the fluid, supported by the plastic ends piece on the spring and the flat closed side presses against the spring washer and the piston.

OK, the rubber cup fits inside the metal cup. Got it!

The rubber cup is a very tight fit in the valve body. So tight I cannot get it to settle in the right position. I expected to see some slight wiggle room when installed. there is a bulbous end on the rubber and a similar shape in the cap to match it and retain it. Is it normal for it to be so tight and is there a special way of inserting it? I am using DOT4 as lube.
Art Pearse

I had a similar issue, I think the replacement parts are not the same shape. It was a couple of years ago and I can't remember if I refitted the old part or not (but suspect I did thinking that it's a non wearing part still in good condition)
Neil McGurk

Neil, I don't have that option as the old bit was disintegrated! I bought the Moss seal kit.
Art Pearse

Art,

It should be tight enough to hold fast in use but it sounds as though yours is too tight because of a mis-match. The rim on the rubber should pop into the groove on the body. I think last time I did it I used a piece of wood of the right diameter to push the rubber into the body until it seated itself properly. Did you get a new valve body in the kit or are you putting a new rubber in the old body? If they came as a pair, at least you can go back to the supplier and complain.

Malcolm, new rubber, old body but very good and clean. I will persevere some more with a prod of the right diameter to fill the cup. Prob is it tends to tilt!
Art Pearse

Finally got the little bugger in - had to clean off some burry edges on the holes in the cup. m/c is all assembled now. The rear cup is quite a tight fit and it needs a bit of pumping back and forth to get it to return smoothly.
