MG MGA - MERRY & HAPPY XMAS

Let me get in first, and say Merry Xmas/Happy Xmas to all those MGA enthusiasts around the World...especially those in the USA who are seemingly frightened to say the words, and use something with "holiday" instead.
Gary Lock

Gee Gary, Its a bit of a half hearted greeting when you are critisizing our American friends, especially when you are seemingly frightened to say "Happy Christmas" and use something with "Xmas" instead?

Happy Christmas,
Matthew.
Matthew Magilton

I've always put MERRY X-MAS and HAPPY HOLLIDAY in the same catagory. MERRY CHRISTMAS to all. Marvin

I have always been under the impression that it is MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR.

I think that I will keep it that way.

There is long history to the use of the term 'Xmas' and it is not what most people think.

I agree with Sandy and wish all you MGA enthusiasts around the World, a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Good idea Gary - Merry Christmas and a Happy MGA New Year to you all - cheers Cam

Well, I would like to say "Merry Christmas", but I understand that in British areas, it is considered bad form to use the term "Merry" and "Christmas" together as "Merry" connotes alcohol consumption, which would be considered improper in connection with Christ (unless one is Catholic- wherever you find 4 priests ,you'll find a fifth). instead preference is given to "Happy Christmas", as no alcohol is implied. (Now, somebody explain "Happy Hour" to me)
Having said that, if you like to make merry on Christmas, be safe, don't overdo it, and remember the reason for the season.
Merry Christmas to all, Happy Christmas to those to whom "Merry" would offend, and to those who deny God's greatest gift and don't believe in Christ, you owe it to your personal integrity to give those holiday days off back to your company.
Mike Parker

Mike in the Uk we all say Merry Christmas and a happy new year. I have never heard of it being considered bad form to use the term Merry?

I like many millions in the UK do not believe that JC was the son of God and therefore do not believe Christmas is anything but a good excuse to get drunk and eat too much :-)

I think most of us can not wait until other religions get onto the holiday bandwagon and lets have more chritmassy type holidays and less work. :-)

Happy holidays everyone whatever destiny you believe in!!

FYI, the abbreviation "X-Mas" is almost 500 years old, as documented in the timeline I put together as part of the invitation for my annual Christmas party (which I've been hosting since high school) this year:

Feel free to enjoy the Christmas music mixes at the link on the bottom of the page. A Unix wish: "[Merry,Happy] Christmas"!

Strange reading this thread...simple words receiving such varying cultural complications etc etc....
May I wish all contributors to the usually excellent MGA BBS best wishes for Christmas and throughout the New Year. These threads have helped me on many occasions and I thank the wise.

I started this thread, and there was never any intention to "criticise our American friends", as they are a great bunch of people...but I get annoyed when the White House refers to the "Holiday Tree"...hasn't it always been the Christmas/Xmas tree?
Merry Ghristmas

May your 4 cylinders beat wlidly with joy, your SUs pump fire into your hearts, your dizzy spark up your life, your chassis travel many miles and our tired old bodies (read that as all us old fellas and our cars) hold together for another year without rusting up!
Merry Christmas and to all you fellow MGA nuts out there who like me ignore the logic of a nice sedate sensible run of the mill hobby (like stamp collecting) continue to enjoy the magic that is MGA and have a Safe Happy New Year

As for me, I know Santa thinks I've been a good boy and has some special Abingdon presents for me, so its off to bed early tomorrow!!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all those friends I've met on this board here and on the far side of the oceans. Not all here in the US of PC will use "holidays" or "seasons greetings". May 2010 be a great year for you all.
Bill Young

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year indeed!!
Use whatever term you feel comfortable with. For me, it'll always be Christmas. I, for one, had a fabulous MGA year. The events on the coming year's calendar suggest that 2010 will be equally wonderful, if not better.
HO! HO! HO!

Merry Christmas to all - my New Year's resolution is to put more miles on the A this year than in 2009!

And yes, here on Long Island it will definitely be a White Christmas.

And the same to you Gary, even if I did say Happy Holidays in my other post! ;)

It isn't that I'm afraid to say Merry Christmas, I just figured I'd include those who celebrate other religious holidays this time of year also. I would NEVER say "holiday tree" however! At least not until they start selling them for Chanukah... :)
Steve S

MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR to all from Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Merry Christmas to everyone. Down south here we were looking forward to our first 'white christmas' for years but its got warmer again so its back to the rain and damp but fortified with much food and drink. Good opportunity to take the MGA out for a run as long as the salt has washed away.
