MG MGA - MGA Brake Caliper Request
Hi, bright idea's for removing seized piston's from Lockheed Calipers that are not connected to the car... Is the only way to use an air line ??? If I can't get them out or they are too far gone - does anyone have any decent Calipers they want to sell..? Thanks Aleks |

I would advise against using compressed air. If the pistons do come out they will either kill someone or go through the side of your shed. Sometimes using a grease gun can work and is quite safe. Mick |

Its OK to use air as long as the piston travel is limited, such as by using a block of wood in between. Remember there are 2 pistons and one will free up before the other. When that happens, you have to restrain the loose one to get the other loose. Anyway, Moss has new calipers for only $120 or so. I bought a pair and they are nice. No core charge. I do have a couple of restored calipers, but I think the shipping from Ontario would be ruinous! |

I got them out of my MGB calipers using an aimed shot at the inlet hole from a couple of inches with my air compressor pistol attachment (pressure turned down). They came out quite readily and under control. But as Mick intimates not always the smartest option, certainly need to be cautious. Perhaps a tyre pump might do it? Steve |

Use a grease gun to pump them out. That way they will not explode out but only ooze. |

A bicycle pump worked for me on the Sprite. I can't remember exactly how I attached it, though. Do the MGA calipers have those flimsy seal retainers that you have to press in? I recall that they were the worst job - far worse than getting the pistons out. |
