MG MGA - MGA Jack on Ebay

There is a correct MGA Shelley LJ225 jack on Ebay (not mine) for cars after chassis No. 93548.

They do not come up very often; twice in 2012; 3 times in 2011; and 4 times in 2009. You will be bidding against affluent Healey 3000 owners so expect to pay anywhere between £70 to £200 ($100 to $300). Starting price is £60 ($90).

The jack on Ebay is painted grey. I have been asked the colour for the MGA which I presume was always red. Does anyone know the correct shade of red for the MGA? I will enter it on my website for future reference.

The jack did better than I expected. It went for £236 ($350).

Yes Steve. Decided to back out of the bidding once it went over £200! Funny thing, but at that money it suddenly started to become a bit of an expensive collector's toy and maybe I didn't really need a Shelley jack at all!!

The chap who won the jack contacted me after the auction. He had used my Shelley database for reference and wanted clarification on one or two statements I had made about Healey jacks - now sorted (I said there would be competition from affluent Healey owners).

It was he who also emailed me the recent Roger Moment Healey toolkit document. It made interesting reading, resulting in the question I have asked in another thread about King Dick jacks in the MGA.

Thanks for the update Steve. I now like my old scissor jack!
Are you going to Goodwood Breakfast Club Tax Free Sunday this weekend? Weather might hold out for it.

Not sure yet. Will let you know if I do.

The buyer who paid £236 for this correct MGA/Healey jack has just contacted me again. He is offering it for sale as he has just found his original in his parts bin!

He is asking £220 for it plus postage (it is located in the UK).

If anyone is interested please contact me in the first instance and I will put you in touch.

My own view is that this is an inflated price, but there again a not dissimilar E-Type variant just went for £845 in the States.

These jacks do not come up that often. This is the recent sales history of the MGA/Healey variant on Ebay:

£193.54 paid on USA Ebay 07 February 2010

£80.00 paid on UK Ebay 14 March 2010

£210.39 paid on USA Ebay 28 April 2010

£208.00 paid on UK Ebay 28 August 2010

£169.61 paid on USA Ebay 9 June 2011

£141.55 paid on USA Ebay 11 August 2011

£72.00 paid on UK Ebay 11 September 2011

£72.00 paid on UK Ebay 22 July 2012

£155.00 paid on UK Ebay 14 August 2012

£236.00 paid on UK Ebay 24 February 2013

Cheers

Does the correct MGA Shelley LJ225 jack make the car go faster or does it just make it more reliable? I'm trying to decide whether I really need one or not. 8^)
Gene Gillam

Helps it back to speed after a flat. Also corners better with the extra ballast in the boot!

Thanks Steve...since I drive slow and am a member of the AAA I guess I can leave the Shelley's to the more spirited members of the group. My wife will be happy.
Gene Gillam

I am still happy with the one I bought for 15 dollars, including a handle. One day I will get around to the wooden t-handle that is missing.

traditionally it used to be the car radio or personal belongings that got stolen when a car was broken into. Now a knowledgeable thief faced with an MGA would go straight for the boot and take the jack as the most valuable loose item. It starts to make more sense for a boot lock that I'm actively considering.

Have a look at the front page of my website for a link to my boot lock. All internal. Uses an mgb glove box lock.

A neighbour just had some oak tree limbs pruned. I got some of the wood and am drying it out prior to turning some handles on my lathe. Let me know the hole dimensions and I will make you a handle.

By the way Dominic, if you need a wooden handle you do not have the correct MGA jack. Which one is it? The reason I ask is that it may not fit under your axle with a deflated tyre.

I hardly dare say it, but although I run these databases I do not use either of the correct Shelley jacks, nor the King Dick. Instead, I keep a modern Metallifacture scissor jack in the boot. Far more practical and probably more safe. The 15 jacks I have are just for display and reference in the garage!

Hi Steve

Most generous on the handle, will have to measure it and report back. Thanks for the offer.

I too have a pair of trolley jacks for real business. One a three tonner with about 80cm lift and a twist handle, the other one just a hobby one for lifting spring pans, gearboxes etc. into position.

I don't think I have ever used the original jack. Again for emergencies I carry a small hydraulic bottle jack in the boot, much more practical but also never used in anger....
