MG MGA - MGA MKII rear light mounts

Starting to put the MGA together now after a long rebuild.
I'm wondering if piping goes around the rear light mounts on the MGA MKII and what colour it is, any one out thier with a MGA MKII ?
DJ Joy

The mounting pads have a rolled edge, no piping needed.
John DeWolf

Bu the end f MK-II production they were using flat plinth pads with no rolled edge. I don't recall the change point, but I think that bit of information does exist.

Following Barney's comments I had a quick look in Clausager and it says on page 87: "101353 (May 61) Rear lamp plinth gasket replaced by cream Prestik".

Does this help?

That's it. 1001 cars after introduction of the 1600-MK-II, so a 1600-MK-II with molded rubber plinth gasket would be rare. Maybe no one would be reproducing those parts.

The SPL describes it as, Prestik - 1/2" x 1/8" (Cream).

Prestik is a strip of flat pliable rubber like adhesive, commonly with peel-off paper on both sides. It is supposed to be reusable, pull off and stick again.

I can only guess how this stuff would be physically applied to the tail light plinth for installation. Maybe run the tape around the edge of the plinth, stick it in place, and trim off the excess afterward?

Has anyone seen the original stuff on a 1600-MK-II? Got a picture of it?

Yes Barney, it was horrible stuff. You peeled it off the tape, applied it to one surface, put the items together then trimmed it off to suit. Sometimes it would harden and crack and other times it would stay so soft it could sag and leak.

DJ Joy,
I would use either grill piping, or the gasket from a 1600 MkI tail light plinth and cut it to suit with the join at the bottom of the plinth.

That sounds like a good idea, I'll use piping so it matches the wings, thanks
DJ Joy

I used the grille piping with the smaller round section on the outside, see attached photo. This approximates the earlier grey plinth gasket part number AHH 6116.

Attached photo is of an original MkII tail lamp plinth gasket, part number AHH 6116. You can see that once installed, only a very small grey round section is visible around circumference of plinth.

I have been looking for a reproduction of this part for a long time. I have never found one in grey. Yes ago, Moss had some in black and that is what is fitted to my car. I think that it was such a small number of cars that no one has been interested in making a correct one for that market.
