MG MGA - MGA Vent Emblem

Recently some desperado stole one of my original Vent Emblems and replaced it with a reproduction one.

I noticed that one was not seating correctly, and on further examination I discovered the "switch".

Here is the difference........

This is a reproduction, Extra metal on Centre bar. (see next post)

This is the Original. No extra metal on centre bar.

Probably not too noticeable on the car to an untrained eye, but it now stand out like dog's balls to mine!

If anyone has a spare original (in any condition) that they would like to sell, please email me.

Thank you.

If you are still interested, I have an original I would send no charge if you cover shipping. It will need to be re-chromed as the brass shows through.

Thank you Bayard.

I think it is terrible that a fellow enthusiast would do that - a real low point for the MG community.

Your original is an early production item.

The replacement (which may very well be a repro item if it doesn't fit perfectly) represents the later factory version where the factory modified them because the originals kept breaking without reinforcement.

Maybe these badges bring out the worst in people.
I know a fellow who needed one cause one of his was broken.
I had an original spare. It was just before Christmas, so I had a long wait at the post office to be served to send it. I didn't request any money for the badge or for postage.
It was received, fitted to the car, and the car then sold. I was never even thanked for my trouble.
I rang the fellow one day to see how he was getting on, as his wife had passed away. A message was passed to me that he was busy, and that I should ring back another day!!
The chap in question had seemed a very nice fellow. Needless to say however I never rang back, and I've not heard from him since.
T Aczel

I was reluctant to mention the circumstances under which it was "switched". Could have just said that I was looking for an "original".
However, the car has only been left unattended on a handful of occasions. I recently noticed some new scratches around the Vent opening and the Emblem was sitting proud of the surface, which it had not done before. The Original was held in place by only 2 speed nuts and these were there laying up against the lip of the vent tunnel.
It is certainly disappointing to think that this could happen.
I am particularly grateful that there are still fine men in this community like Bayard DeNoie and Mark Wellard who have offered me replacements (see above).

I can only echo that it's just disgusting that anyone who is enough of an enthusiast to know the difference in the parts would do this to another's car.

I had a similar experience as T Aczel a few years ago... I spent an entire afternoon in the shop with a former classmate, helping him sort out a project, since he had run into several snags. Was dismayed to see it for sale in the classifieds section of a local forum only weeks later. Seeing my freely offered help used to make a quick buck like that definitely made me less inclined to offer the same sort of free help in the future.
