MG MGA - MGB alternator as replacement

Is the late model, '79-'80 MGB alternator considered a three-wire installation to replace a generator?

Why do you need/want a 3-wire installation?

The one I was told to buy (and will be using with the A/C install in my coupe) was this one: http://www.shopping.com/db-electrical-adr0174/eeBTwsd3t01AUfj1NHjJPg==/info

A local auto electric shop swapped out the pulley for a v-belt at no cost to me.
Gene Gillam

Gene's is far better than the late Lucas. Lucas are underpowered and when they die a lot of stuff dies. The selenium rectifier design was good when it cane out, but SCR are far better and tougher.

I posted on the wrong site. My car is a TD, but it has so many MGA components and I read so much of Barney's stuff that when I had an alternator question I placed it here.

Eggxactly the same for a TD.

Bobby,
the late B lucas will work (got one fitted to my A). Simple swap and easy fit. All depends of whhich one is easiest to lay your hands on. depending on how tight he engine bay is, the Lucas alternator is quite wide compared to the orginal dynamo or generator in your speak ;-) It does require a reconfiguration to Negative earth though.
