MG MGA - MGCC Of Australia

During my stay in Melbourne Australia I was invited by Robin Page and Mike Ellsmore to give a 20 minute talk at their MGCC of Victoria monthly natter. Many thanks to Barry Gannon for co-ordinating my attendance and taking me there.

I have to take my hat off to all those MG nuts down under; what a fabulous facility they have. They purchased a factory unit and have decked it out in a fantastic display of MG memorabilia and automobilia. It has a purpose built presentation suite and seating for about 120 members. I was particularly impressed with the MG flywheel and crankshaft assembly that had been set up to hold IT equipment and presenters notes etc - very original. The wives/other halves are very much part of their MG family and provided a magnificent spread of food once the formalities had been completed.

It was a great pleasure chatting with the 120+ members present. All in all a great evening.

The facility is a great credit to you all, well done. MG is alive and well.

Looks and sounds like a very good set up Steve.

We are visiting Australia later in the year but I'm not sure if I can get to Melbourne as we are heading up the East Coast

John, if you are up the Gold Coast way (before Brisbane), let us know.

Steve,
It was a pleasure to have you join us for our monthly meeting - and a very entertaining presentation too (Steve didn't delve to deeply into the histroy of Shelley jacks but rather concentrated on his time in the RAF as fighter pilot!)- we look forward to seeing you again.

John and other MGA owners north of the equator,
If you are down our way let the Club know and we can arrange to show you a good time - we have about 160 events a year that caters for all tastes (racers, polishers, sightseers, beer drinkers, wine drinkers and teetotallers).
(The MGCC of Victoria is the largest car club of any make in Australia - membership in 2012 is just over 1600 - with our own clubrooms (auditorium, kitchen, library, boardroom and garage), 2 Club MGBs for junior training, event trailer (equiped with BBQs, marquees, tables, traffic cones and even our own Automated External Defibrillator) plus our own hillclimb circuit (Rob Roy)that is coming up for its 75th anniversary this year.

Great to have you at our monthly meeting and your presentation was superb, many complimentary comments from the members. As I am temporary librarian I usually sit at the top of the stairs and count the crowd which was 160 the night you were there. Our regular librarians both of whom are previous A register captains currently run a B&B called Kimbers Ark in a town called Banbury in Oxfordshire and would be pleased to meet any MG folk who call past. They have a couple of A's and B's awaiting their return. As mike has said if anyone comes this way contact us as there is always something on.No winter hibernation here. Thanks Steve. Jim

Good to hear you have that most important piece of equipment for MGA (owners!).. a defibrillator!.On this risk reduction basis would appreciate advice on what I do to join this regular heartbeat club?
Neil Ferguson

Neil,
Amazing story how we came to have our own Automated External Defibrillator. At a sprint meeting last year a club member collapsed between races and was given CPR by two club members, who had recently attended a Club run CPR course, whilst waiting for the track ambulance officers who were on the scene in about 3 mins. with an AED. The guy survived is now our Club president! The Club thought maybe we wont be so lucky next time so we had a few fund raisers and bought an AED and trained several key people in its use. It now goes to all our major events - competition and social.

It is easy to join our Club - follow this link

Mike..thanks for advice. I split my time between Melbourne and Narooma on Southern NSW coast and keep the mga up there..great roads for driving ....but would appreciate meeting a few other mga folk .I may also drive down after installing the Judson etc in next few months. Wish me luck with the latter.
I will look at the site and probably join...

I always thought defib. machines had two big pads and when applied to the beef enabled you to hover above the bed whilst they scorched patches of skin of you.

So I thought that while touring Australia in July I might say hello to a few fellow MGA owners.

But now I'm not so sure as I get the impression that any hospitality offered is just an excuse for you guys to play with the defibrillator at my expense!!

I will look at touring options for New Zealand instead.

I think most of us look forward to touring Austrailia and New Zealand when we retire, funds permitting. I am only a few years away potentially and assuming Europe's economy recovers I will definately look forward to this wonderful hospitality and establishments.
