MG MGA - Mineral Blue

Does any one have a formula for acrylic Mineral Blue that could be made up by a paint supplier in Australia? The references for the colour on Barney's site and also Clausager's reference in both his "A" & "B" Books are American/English references and unfamiliar with suppliers I have spoken to here. The 2 Pack formula is readily available but I really would prefer the respray done in acrlyic.
I am fortunate in having rather a large paint chip of the colour sent to me many years ago by Ault & Wiborg Paints and it can obviously be eye matched if necessary. A problem of a mismatch of colours of course arises if a further batch of paint has to be again eye matched in the future.
Thanks,
Rod.

You are unlikely to find an Australian formula for Mineral Blue as BMC in Australia never used it. These colours, and their formulae, were devised by the paint companies but named in conjunction with the car manufacturer.
BMC/Leyland used many blue colours, but none named Mineral Blue. They may have used paint to the Mineral Blue formula, but gave it one of their many other names for blue.
I will email a list of BMC/Leyland colours, but it will not help. The colour names got ever more ridiculous the closer you get to the company closing down.
I also have the formulae for most colours they used, but it of no use if the name is different.

I went through the same type of agro trying to get a local paint code for Aus Billaroy Blue. [ early A ] [where do they get these names from ] Nothing like it now exists. Iris Blue by a down under name ? , no, it's slightly lighter. Eventually found a company to make it up in pressure pacs from a sample. Sean

Hi Sean,

You think the name Billeroy Blue is bad? Have a look at the rest of the names on the attached page. This is only one page of 23 pages of Australian car colours, and it only covers a few years. It has the formula for Billeroy Blue.
I believe the highest paid job at BMC (Australia) was the Vice President responsible for silly names for car colours.

Hi Rod,
I had a similar problem with an MGA. The closest match to the colour I could get was "Government bus green" (In the sixties they probably ran a lot of Leyland buses). When the colour was matched I asked for 8 lites to be mixed and purchased a couple of new 1 litre tins at the same time, used about 6 litres for a total respray and have a perfect colour match for touch ups & I've used about 500ml. in 10yrs. If you decide to do this purchase a cheap bucket as well because they will sell it to you in 2 x 4lt tins.It will be mixed in those tins so there may be a slight colour change. Mix both batches together in the bucket to standardise the colour and return to the tins when ready to use. If they have a 2 pack formula they should be able to use similar tints in acrylic.

I understand that Mercedes Marine Blue is the same color. I hope so that is what I used on my coupe.

Rod, Maybe I'm not knowledgeable enough about paints, but it seems like my body shop guy can always match things up. I know he has used a camera from Nyquist before on my cars. My Mineral Blue car is lacquer painted with Ditzler 15406. Perhaps they can match from the number. Its an interesting color, photos always look different depending upon the time of day, shading, angles, etc. Dennis

Dennis your are right about shades and angles etc.,My current model Subaru is Pearl White [a metalic finish] and I have been reliably informed that it is impossible to match [ repair ] it. Even though the paint match may be ok it depends what angle etc., the factory painted it at. From one angle the match will look perfect and from another in the same light it looks miss matched. Subaru paint ahop advice don't repaint the bumpers if you can possible avoid it. !
Makes matching faded MG paint look easy.

There is a lot of violet tint used to mix mineral blue. In the shade it will look quite blue, in the sun it almost looks grey/blue.

Thanks all for your input & comments; they are appreciated. I have in fact located the Ault & Wiborg cellulose formula for Mineral Blue and will forward it to any-one who may be interested.
Mick---you are correct, the colour is not included in any of the schedules you sent to me. Thanks, I'll
certainly retain the information.
Dennis---I note the skuttle top & parcel shelf in you coupe has been finished in a grey "vinyl". Whilst these areas were mostly clad in a matching blue colour, grey was a legitimate factory option according to Clausager. Being such a light colour do you have any windscreen reflection problems?
Thanks,
Rod.
