MG MGA - Monza style fuel cap
Hi guys, can you help, has anyone fitted a Monday style fuel cap to MGA My old style fuel cap is not secure, and always smells of fuel vapour leaking out, so I bought a Monza style cap with locking cap for security. See the pics I attach. The lip on the neck has a slot which will stop the new cap from going on , question what to do can I cut off the lip ? Or do I have to buy a new neck ? The sizes seem the same, it's just the sticking out lip in the way ! ![]() |

Have you checked that there is a cork gasket inside the original fuel cap. They get compressed over the years so fail to seal in the petrol vapour. You can make one easily enough with any cork stock. Seems a shame to ruin the original look of the car. If they want to nick your petrol let em. Bet not one of the guys on this forum has ever had fuel siphoned or sabotaged. Anyone? |

Its not a Monza style, but I installed a vented, locking cap on my MKII. I did have to modify the filler pipe by removing the "lip" that is causing you an issue; I used a gas proof epoxy to round out the area where I removed the lip. The gas tank does need to be vented, either thru the cap or some other mechanism to avoid creating a vacuum.

Can't seem to get 2 photos attached to the first post; here's a shot of my cap.

I wasn't worried about getting fuel stolen, a friend of mine had dirt or sand or something put into his tank with a non locking cap ! |

I did say stolen or sabotaged. So that's one count of sabotage |

Two counts of sabotage; that's why I installed a locking cap. |

Hi, I have a Monza style fuel cap with a locking cap underneath. I bought it from Moss Eu but didn't read ALL of the info. To fit the item I bought I also had to buy a different fuel filler neck also; the pipe that runs through the bodywork to the flexible coupling. Once I had this, fitting was easy. Below is the quote from their site and the part number: To fit to MGAs you will need to change the filler neck extension (470-852) |

Not that it makes a lot of difference but the cork gasket fits into the filler neck, not the cap. Jim |

I changed my filler cap recently, by installing a lockable one. I purchased a used MGB filler neck, cut off the very end of it and welded it to the MGA filler neck. Nice weld, looks perfect and works a treat as the MGB lockable filler cap now fits perfectly. Think the MGB filler neck cost me a fiver.. And no fuel smell.... :-) |

Yeah your right JL, cork in neck not cap. Should have checked. |
