MG MGA - Moss Motors Fuel Tank/fFuel Line Fitting

I recently installed one of the new Moss Motors fuel tanks in my MGA 1600. Everything seemed to be going well unti I got about 10 gallons of gas in the tank and noticed a small leak at the fuel line fitting on the tank. Seemed like a simple fix just to tighten the fitting only to have the nut spin free. Closer comparison of the fitting and the fitting on my old tank indicated the the fitting on the new tank was slightly smaller in diameter than original and would not allow for full tightening of the connection. (It felt like it went on correctly.)

I got back to dealer late yesterday afternoon. He checked with Moss Motors. Moss found that they had some (not all) tanks in stock with the same problem and are shipping me a new fuel tank and fuel line.

If you have recently gotten a new fuel tank from Moss, I recommend that you check this fitting before you install the tank or put gas in the tank.

I have to say that the response from all parties (my dealer and Moss Motors) was wonderful. My issue was resolved in under 24 hours.

Hopefully, I got the only bad one that got shipped (not likely.)

I installed the new and improved tank in my 1600 this last spring along with a new fuel line and had no issues with that. My issue is despite their claim the tank straps do not line up with the bolt holes on the frame. Not wanting to send it back and have to wait for another tank I made it work. Now if I could just get the darn sending unit to stop leaking gas I would be happy.

Anyone try the fuel takes on Ebay ? One is Aluminum and one is over sized . Wondering if either are any good ?

Don,

Thanks for the heads up. I am planning to install a new Moss tank tomorrow. Hopefully I will not have the same problem.

The oversize tank hangs down lower, so travel at your own risk. The alloy tank is a little lighter weight (not that much difference unless you go racing), and likely more susceptible to road hazard damage. The standard steel tank by Jorge is too damn heavy, because he used thicker steel. If you paint the tank and take care of it there is no reason to need or want it to be heavier. My original issue factory tanks is now 52 years old with 380,000 miles and still going strong.

Kris,

I had no problem with the strap alignment. When, I installed the sending unit I used the Moss cork gasket (293-415), new screws (323-728) that came with plastic washers, and #1 Permatex "Form-A-Gasket" (Code 1B) sealant on both sides of the gasket. No leaks there.
