MG MGA - Moss seat belts

Has anyone got the Moss 3 point belts 222-206 or 222-209?
I have a question before I buy them.
Art Pearse

I bought the 222-209 many years ago. I bought the upper mount from Todd Clarke. I mounted the eye bolts in the locations shown here. http://www.mgaguru.com/mgtech/interior/int121.htm
For the inside bolts I welded plates in the corner of the frame instead of the washers that page suggests.

What do you want to know about the belts?
Jeff Schultz

Jeff, I looked at the picture showing the belt and hardware, and it shows two snap ends with eyebolts and one bolted end. It describes the bolted end as the shoulder mount, but by the looks of the picture the snap end on the long end of the belt looks like the shoulder. Thats the way I would like to use it, snaps on the shoulder and on the outer frame. Is it possible to use it that way or is the Moss description not right?

The snap hook is supposed to be the lower end. I got mine years ago and the upper end doesn't look exactly like the picture. On mine the upper end is a triangular metal plate and is the adjuster. It has no separate adjuster(#3) like in that picture.

As far as using the snap on the upper end, I don't know why you would want to do that. For the lower outside mount I drilled a hole through the spring mount as shown on Barney's site and mounted the eye bolt there. It is very easy to unsnap from outside the car. The ones on the inside never need to be unsnapped.

I do wish I had bought the 206 instead of the 209. I always have the inside belts at the limit of their adjustment and wish for just a little more.
Jeff Schultz

Jeff, the idea of having the shoulder point as a snap fitting is to easily put up and down the hood. I believe the belt runs over the hood frame when it is stowed.

Art Pearse

I have never had a problem raising or lowering it. Just unsnap the lower end and lay the belt on the turtle deck. Most people seem to use the original type mounts with a pin disconnect for the lower outside end with no problems. The snap hook on the lower end works the same way and is even easier to unhook than the pin disconnect.

Since the latch on the shoulder belt just slides up and down you could probably use the snap on the top.

OK, thanks Jeff

Art, my car has these seat belts fitted but they have snap hook fittings on all ends.

The lower mounting loops are fitted on re-enforced plates welded to the chassis rails on the floor next to the rear bulkhead. There isnt much space between the seats and the chassis rails and so once the snap hooks are clipped onto the mounting eyes I tend to leave them be.
I unhook the clip from the rear wheel arch behind the seat when I raise or lower the soft top.

If you are fixing them for the first time it would be well worth spending some time experimenting with the position of the rear mounting before you finalise it.
This may help prevent the shoulder strap from continually falling off your shoulder which can be a common problem with these fixed belt set ups.

I could be tempted to experiment with inertia reel belts just to see if I could eliminate this.

Art,

Have you ordered the seatbelts from Moss yet? If not, send me an e-mail at bscr@bscr.com and I can get you a discount on them.

Thanks,

Ken

Ken, now you tell me!
But thanks for the offer. I got them thru Little British Car Co for $44.63 each which I think is a 15% discount from Moss list. They have 2 snap hook ends and one fixed end, plus some eyebolts etc. I'm happy with them. Now I can proceed with the appropriate anchor points. I was reviewing my resto pics and realized I had done some fibreglass repairs to the rear tunnel where the anchors go, so I may have to reinforce this area or move it further back.

ken, I've noticed you offering discounts on a couple of threads. What discount do you give on the Moss list price?...are you a dealer or what?
