MG MGA - Moss vs Scarborough Faire Grille
Hi folks. I need to replace the grille on my MGA 1500 roadster because it is dented and bent. I hear that the repro Moss grilles dont fit too well. Is this true? Has anyone purchased a grille recently from Scarborough Faire? Do their grilles fit any better than the Moss ones? I guess unless you pay a fortune, you get chromed steel these days instead of chromed brass, correct? As a side note, All my body panels are straight and smooth, and I only have one more to primer. After I shoot colour coat on the door jambs, and rockers, I can start re installing the body panels. This "minor restoration that I figured would only take a month or two is already a 5 month project, and is not finished yet. Oh well, it's gonna look nice in it's fresh paint....Cheers, Glenn Also: anyone have a decent used grille, or grille shell they want to part with for a reasonable price? ;-) |

Glenn.. Do not finish paint on front of car before fitting grill.. After all these miles few cars are as straight as they were when new.. Fit the grill first then refinish and paint, after which the grill will appear as it should. You may have to push and pull the nose section to fit. Sandy |

What colour are you planning on painting it Glenn? The picture you have in the MGA Gallery shows a faded pale yellow? The grille did not look too bad then. Will you get it finsihed before the snows arrive? Missed your poetry!!? Steve |

Hey guys, I too am getting to buy a grill and have "heard" that Moss re-tooled and supposedly, their "new" grills are as original in shape, and construction-chrome over brass. The price seems more reasonable too. I haven't contacted SF yet to see what they have available. Cheers! |

Glenn, I bought a grill from SF a few years ago and I got it fit very nicely. However, as has been suggested, I spent quite a bit of time "tweaking" the nose of the car and the mounting holes to get it right before paint. BTW I have a friend who has a very nice grill for sale...he's getting ready to put it on e-bay. I could get you his contact info if you're interested. Cheers, Gerry |

Thanks GT, I believe I'll just try the "new and improved" Moss version. Cheers! |

I bought one of the Moss chromed brass grilles about two years ago, it fitted perfectly and I'm very pleased with it.

Thanks Lindsay, Looks great! I spoke at length with the Moss saleman and he assured me that Moss did lots to get this new version correct. A little pricy at a shade over $300.00 but if it really does fit...mostly, I know I'll have to do some minor fitments, then it will be worth it as to re-chrome one was just as expensive. Cheers! |

Hi Steve. My MG will be probably painted Dodge Viper racing yellow. Not a stock colour either, but kind of nice. It's a lot brigheter than the old yellow Missed my poetry? Surely you jest, lol. Hi Gerry. I wWould be interested in your friend's grille perhaps. Do you have the contact info for him? Thanks, Glenn |

Ok Glenn, I will do it for you. Our Glenn is in need of a grille A repro version designed to thrill Will SF or Moss be the best fit? He needs to know for a costly bit A rush job for the Canadian fellow To also paint in Dodge Viper Yellow Snow will soon make Glenn car-less When it is finished is anyone's guess. Steve |

Hi Steve. I am concerned about getting the car finished before winter sets in. It's taking much longer than I anticipated. See picture. Good poem btw, thanks.

Glenn, is that an elephant hiding in the bottom right corner of your boot, or should that be trunk?! |

Glenn, You have mail! Gerry |

Glenn, Apparently you Don't have mail. I got a system response indicating the message was undeliverable. How about you e-mail me at my home address: mrmga1958@prodigy.net and I'll send you the info when I get home tonight. Cheers, Gerry |

I recently bought one off of ebay. An original that had be rechromed. Sadly the fit was terrible. When I placed it on the front of the car there was about an one inch gap at the corners. I had to bend it so much I ended up putting a kink in the bottom. Obviously, what ever way you go do this before painting. |

I recently bought the chromed brass version from Moss. Note...they have two quality levels of grills. This fit up extremely well. One of the body mount holes had to be slotted slightly, but that's it. Based upon my experience, I would not be reluctant to recommend the Moss chromed brass grill shell + SS slats. |

Hi Lindsay. Yes, that is an elephant in my boot. He is just slightly below the coiled Cobra which is perched above and ready to strike. Cheers, GLenn |
