MG MGA - Moss water pumps

Anyone recently bought a water pump from Moss (460-950)? Is it the old style cast iron type or el cheapo Al/plastic? Jeff at LBC was pretty vague about it.
Art Pearse

I've kept one in the boot, just in case, but Ive never used one. I think the original type can be reconditioned; new bushings, etc. I like the orginal because it can be lubricated occationally which has kept me going for 15 years, and who knows how long before that. But I do keep the Moss one on hand for a quick fix on the road if need be.

The New water pumps from MGOC are cast iron- I recently replaced mine cost around £28 uk pounds

So, Christine, is it cast iron ?
Art Pearse

Art. Moss is carrying the cast iron water pumps.

The alloy ones were made by Quinton Hazel and were never popular, but they were the only manufacturer for a long time. Now a relatively good quality cast iron one is available, so that is what Moss is stocking.

Art. I do have to point out though that Jeff Zorn is not necessarily selling the same product that Moss Motors carries. His use of the Moss part number does not guarantee that the part was supplied by Moss.
It has caused problems in the past.
KJ Dodd

Thanks for the warning KJ. Can you point me to a Moss dealer who sells the right one for sure?
Art Pearse

Well, there's Moss themselves...
Steve Simmons

Right!
Art Pearse

I dont think mine is cast iron, more like cast aluminum. Its old, maybe ten years anyway.

Mine is cast, made in India and will not accept the fan pulley without enlarging the pulley's circumference.
PETE CERKA

Pete, what do you mean exactly, enlarge the circumference of the pulley?
Art Pearse

Just got the new pump from Moss. Cast iron, made in India. Sealed for life bearings. Very good part. Pete - yes the fan pulley was a bit tight on the hub. I had to take a couple of strokes with a half round file on the pulley hole. It was 3 thou too tight. No problem.

Can anybody tell me where to get an old water pump rebuilt in the states or tell me where to get the parts and instructions on how to rebuild the pump.
GK George

The Moss pump is a very good reproduction of the original (all cast iron) except for the sealed bearings, and is only $49. I doubt anyone could beat that price. It should actually be straightforward to DIY, or so I thought. Pull off the drive flange, went OK. Pull off the impeller - The puller legs slip on the slope, but locked them on, then the impeller broke, but still on the shaft. Gave up. Plus the later old style bearing set up is not repairable as far as I can see. You can buy new seals, but you need the impeller off to install it. Maybe lots of heat will get it off.
Art Pearse

GK, University Motors in Michigan used to have rebuilt pumps on the shelf, you might try them (and John Twist could use the business).
