MG MGA - My screeching brakes
| As an add on to my previous thread entitled 'Mysterious Screeching Sound', I'm back to report that the nasty screech coming from the right hand front brake drum, has been completely eliminated. What I did was to follow the advice by Lindsay Sampford and replaced the old linings on that wheel.. I now have silent brakes all round. I also replaced the linings on the left front side so as to have the front brakes matched. Thank you Lindsay. Frank |

| Frank Did you find a cause inside the drum? The reason I ask is that I had a problem this spring on the same wheel when I found part of the steel impregnated lining had rusted solid to the inside of the drum. Eventually I managed to get it moving a bit so I could remove the drum and found the bit that was rusted to the drum had separated from the shoe and the rest of that lining. Clearly I had to reline it and I am now replacing the drum as well. Paul |

| Hi Paul, the only cause of the screeching brakes was the old linings. Over time they had bedded into the old oversize drum, and naturally they took the form of the old 10 & 1/8 inch drum. Had I left them in place, they would have eventually bedded into the new drum, and take the form of this drum. In all probability, they would have taken a considerable amount of braking to bed in again, with the screeching still fully audible. New linings solved the problem instantly. Frank |
