MG MGA - New Mga Rack & Pinion

Just a "heads up" to anyone thinking of buying a rack & pinion unit for their Mga. Victoria British has them on sale at the moment for $129.00 plus ship = $153.00.(They were origionally $199.00 + ship.) Moss is asking $206.00 plus shipping.(They were origionally $249.95 + ship. ) I just bought one and the CSR on the phone quoted me $199.95 but when I told her they were $129.95 on the website ....she checked, and voila....that"s the price.

PS: I have no affiliation or commitment to VB.

Just be so lucky you LHDers that you can buy a new one. I have again contacted Moss UK to see if they are going to get a RHD version done..they were looking at it 12 months ago, and Dominic Clancy even offered to loan them his spare so they could copy it, but they havn't taken up the offer I believe?

Latest cyber prices are around the GBP800 mark, which would be about US$1700!!

I guess that means that all the LHD rack added together are worth less than all the RHD racks put together. There were 10 times as many LHD cars made.

I hope that the manufacturer (it used to be made in Argentina) has improved the quality control. Just over one year ago a friend of mine purchased one at this "bargain" price and installed it in his car during restoration. The rack was so stiff he had difficulty steering the car. Because the steering rack is made in one piece it cannot be dismantled as the original for removal from the car. My friend had to cut through the steering shaft to remove it. I hope that these racks have improved in quality and that you don't have the same problems. Let us know how you install it, because the previous ones couldn't be dismantalled.

Installation instructions for the new Moss steering racks include disassembly and reassembly of the pinion shaft.

I picked up my new R&P this morning and so far it looks very good. It has a made in Argentina sticker on it and comes complete with the rack boots. It seems very well made and is there is a nice secure (no looseness) feeling to it. It is not completely orgional and has no place for the zerk fitting...the steering shaft end cover is a hole with a bolt(not the plate with brass shims) ....and the tension adjustment nut is different. I will try and get some photo's of it up on this post and when I install it, I will photo document the effort.
