MG MGA - New Tyres

Just had to change the tyres on the A, plenty of tread left but the rubber was getting hard, not surprising as the date code on the Avon Turbosteels suggested they were made in 1989! I had got the impression from postings on this site that Firestone 560s had been discontinued, but it appears that is not the case. I have just bought four 165/R15 Firestone 560s, minted in the second week of March this year, for £174.80 delivered to my door in record time from here http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?details=Ordern&cart_id=61308313.110.13411&typ=24120&ranzahl=4&Breite=165&Quer=80&Felge=15&Speed=T&weiter=0&kategorie=6&Ang_pro_Seite=15&Transport=P&dsco=110 So for anyone considering new rubber, these people come highly reccomended.

Lindsay - I am thinking of having these fitted to my ZA Magnette - in the picture it looks like the writing on the tyre is quite highly embossed and in white - whats it like on the actual tyre please?

My local independent tyre place has given me a really good deal on these - 5 of them for £40 each - fitted inc balance and vat etc etc

Anybody else using these 560's?

Regards to all

Can you, or anyone else, remember the 155 tyre previously recommended on this forum? I'm looking for something slightly narrower.

I have just had 560s fitted and im very happy with them, also they dont look to modern, Vin

that's a good price. Bob West stocks them. That's where Vin and I got them. I paid a bit more than yours, but it included fitting balancing on Bob's hybrid balancer.

Gobby, it's hard to see the writing at all on them when they are fitted; unless you are looking for it, and it isn't picked out in white as in the picture. That's a jolly good price if it includes fitting, just check the date code on them to make sure they are not selling you "museum pieces"!

Steve, I had to fit the myself, but it's good exercise when it's raining and the alternative is re-decorating the bedroom! I just balance the front ones on the car (wires). I do the same as I do on motorcycle wheels, spin the wheel, see where it stops and add weight to the light side (on the inside edge of the rim so it doesn't show); seems to work, I dont get any shake or vibration. Someone will say that's not the way to do it, but when I first got the car the wheels were loaded with weights and it shook like crazy at about 60. I pulled all the weights off and re-balanced them my way and hey presto!

Bruce, I have seen Vredestein recommended for MGAs and they are available in 155 size. http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?details=Ordern&cart_id=61308313.110.13411&typ=D-100610&ranzahl=4&Breite=155&Quer=80&Felge=15&weiter=0&kategorie=6&Ang_pro_Seite=15&Transport=P&dsco=110

Hi all,
I am the person in Bridgestone (Firestone) Europe responsible for hanging on to these tyres in our line-up :-) (Engineering Manager for passanger car tyres)
We manufacture around 3 production runs each year so there should always be fresh tyres available. Sidewalls are black and look relatively classic.

I fitted a new set on my MGA last December and have already put 1000kms on them (daily driver in winter as well as summer).

If anyone has any issue with them then please let me know, I am always happy to help out.

I would say that it is possible to balance wire wheels on a standard machine but some skill is needed to choose the right cones for the job (usually needing 2 sets to have a good fit).

I replaced my tyres last year with Vredenstein Classics 155/r15 they look good and seem to perform well- I bought mine from S C parts with new tubeless wire wheels!! cost around £60.00 each for the tyres fitted and balanced

The Vredenstein Classics look very nice - I wanted to fit 165's but the price jumps up quite a bit

Neil - well done - those tyres seem popular - with Magnette owners too.

Thanks for your help guys

Cheers
