MG MGA - Oil & water temp lines

Hey fellas,

Is there anything to removing these other than unfastening the oil temp line at the gauge and the block and feeding it through the firewall?

The water temp line looks like it can be removed from the block and just fished through the firewall as it has a lot of flex to it.

Am I missing anything?

I'm particularly curious about the oil line as it is quite hard and I don't want to damage it.

Thanks,
Christopher

Hi Chris , make sure you disconnect the battery first otherwise it's bound to touch something, trust me I've done it

I would agree fully with the second remark, having decided it was too much trouble to disconnect the battery and immediately shorting out the water line.

Yes you can remove the oil line at the gage but the temp line and bulb must be removed from the block and fished through the firewall and dash. Be carefull not to damage the temp line as it is expensive to have repaired.

Christopher,
If the water temp probe hasn't been removed in a while it's very likely to be frozen to the head. The original fittings were brass and will deform is too much force is applied with a BFW. This is one area where using heat can cause problems. Too much heat will melt the solder joint on the water probe and let the gas out. Ask me how I know....:)
Good Luck,

Christopher, You may strike trouble when trying to remove the temp. bulb from the head. If it has been in there for years it can be corroded and very difficult to dislodge.
I recommend you fit an extra brass ferrule (see below)when you re-assemble. The brass on brass will not corrode and will come away cleanly in the future.
Good luck, Barry

Thanks fellas. The bulb came out no problem. It has been in there 10 years so I guess I was lucky in getting it out undamaged.

Now the dash is out.

Getting closer to body removal.

Cheers,
Christopher
