MG MGA - one for the CKD experts

While cleaning the heater shelf on my 1960 A, I came across another number above the usual MGA number, in this case MGA 619 which matches the plate on the car. Above that is 75330 which matches the car number on the plate and I believe is the UK chassis number. I couldn't find any number on the chassis when I cleaned it. Is it usual to have the chassis number stamped on the heater shelf?

Matthew, if you double check on the LHS front dogleg, you may find a chassis number...it may be faint from painting etc., and if you lightly sand there, you could "possibly" find the number. I've found the number there on three CKD cars now.

Hi Gary
Yes, I had heard that but I couldn't find anything. I was more interested in the fact that the chassis number is stamped on the heater shelf.

Mathew, I thought others more knowledgable than I am about Australian assembled cars would have chimed in by now. Certainly my 1962 assembled 1600 Mk2 has the body and chassis numbers stamped onto the heater shelf as well. I know this was standard practice on Australian assembled MGA's, but I don't know if this applies to all the MGA's built here, or whether it commenced some time during the production run.
While it shows poorly on this photo, it may give you a bit of an idea of where my numbers are situated.

Matthew,
All Australian CKD MGA's had the UK chassis number and Australian build number stamped on the horizontal heater shelf, just in front of the heater aperture.
The exact position of these two stampings can vary a bit, sometimes one above the other, sometimes less commonly, side by side.
In your case MGA619 is the build number, the body number is on the small steel plate spot welded to the vertical firewall next to the RH bonnet hinge the same as Abingdon built MGA's. It is worth noting that for reasons unknown, the body numbers were not assigned to Australian MGA's from early to mid 1960 onwards.
As Gary says, the chassis number may also be found on the lower end LHS front dogleg, but for reasons unknown, probably less than half Australian MGA's have this stamping.

My 1957 MGA has both numbers 34868 and MGA32, although one major difference is the UK build plates.

B Jackson

For B Jackson.

Does your CKD car not have an Australian build plate as shown in the attached image?
Does it have an Abingdon plate?

Hi Mick
Mine was a very early build Australian MGA, sold in Brisbane in Dec 1957. The original build plate was an Abingdon plate.
