MG MGA - Oops
NUTZ! After replacing the u-joint in the steering knuckle I discovered that the zert fitting should have been installed before reassembly. While taking the thing back apart, I dropped on of the "caps" and all of the needle bearings came out. The long and the short of it is that I am now missing two needle bearings. Question; does anyone know the part number of the u-joint so that I could obtain one locally? Moss is at least 5 days away. Thanks, Tom |

Hardy-Spicer HS-194. I think it's about the only part that is in every MG. Somewhere I have an old box that shows them being for "MG 1930-1980". |

Are you sure that isn't the number of the propshaft UJ? |
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo |
Double oops! It is the prop shaft UJ number. Sorry! |

I have been trying for hours to compose a web page for cross reference of the steering U-joint numbers. http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/steering/sr117.htm So far the only manufacturer's number I have is Quinton-Hazell QL301, and I can't find any cross to another manufacturer. I found the Q-H web site, but no information there either, not even dimensions. Does anyone have a new MGA steering U-joint in their possession, and could give a manufacturer's part number (other than Q-H)? Does anyone have a loose part where they could measure the bearing cap diameter (or yoke ID), and the length across ends of the bearing caps? |

I have an old yoke somewhere. I'll dig around for it. |

Not 100% certain, but some quick googling suggests GKN HS120 or GMB GU350. |

Barney From 1975 until 1980 I was parts manager for an Austin/MG dealer and way back in 1975 I made a note in my parts list that the original partnumber 17H3873 was replaced with partnumber 8G3007. And GUJ200 is officially a Unipart number {(G)eneral (U)niversal (J)oint}. Unipart was the official parts supplier for all kinds of British motor cars. http://www.unipart.co.uk/ Hope this helps a bit Rutger |

Thanks for the references. More hours into this, and I finally make a little headway. I found the dimensions, which makes verification of new numbers a lot more certain. And I finally found a couple of common brand name numbers that are cross referenced by lots of odd name manufacturers. Surely someone must have Hardy-Spicer U-joint number, as Moss is selling them. I find no reference to 8G3007 on the internet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's real. For the propshaft U-joint there are more then a dozen numbers within BMC - Leyland - Rover. This number might be found in a MGB Service Parts List, but I don't have a copy of that one. Latest update here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/steering/sr117.htm |

Ha. Silly me. This is where the thread started, Hardy-Spicer HS-194. I don't know how far back it goes, but it is not used on the T-types, or on MGB 1975-1980. The one that is used on (almost) all MG is the propshaft U-joint (different web page). |
Barney Gaylord |
Boo on me again. Now I know why I didn't list the Hardy-Spicer number the first time around. I'm pretty sure that HS194 is the larger U-joint for the propshaft, and I still don't have the Hardy-Spicer number for the steering U-Joint. |

Bunch of numbers turn up by Google 17H3873; U-Joints - Terrys Jaguar Parts Steering Column U-Joint - 1961-1974. U-Joint ONLY Old Part Numbers: 5426 17H3873 QL301 1020080. Part No: GUJ200X, Price: $6.90. QTY: ... www.terrysjag.com TRF has HS ones, I think, very dear! I expect that you will do better looking up other apps. like PTO drives. I think my big truck (72 IH 4070A) had them on PTO and steering and shift linkage. FRM |

Yup, I checked all of those. 17H3873, QL301, GUJ200, all good. 5426, 1020080, unknown. Terrys Jaguar sells parts, no cross ref. I can't find HS steering joints in TRF site. PTO drives in low power are likely, but so far none of the known numbers turn that up in a search. |

Very old Geon book shows it as U35. There is a HS catalogue from HS Australia, but I can't download it on my crappy internet connection. http://www.hardyspicer.com.au/driveline_products.asp I figured that TRF was supplying HS joints under 17H3873 as that is their practice when possible, and something has to account for $29.95 for a $6 part! You might call them; Charles Runyan is a librarian and has set up a system that cross references any known part numbers through time to what is currently supplied. I don't know to what degree this can be accessed by outsiders, but they have found some good X-ref for me in the past. FRM |
