MG MGA - Paint

Hi All,

So if I stick to these codes for my MGA:

http://www.mgcars.org/MGA/mgapaint.html

What brands should I avoid if the car is likely to be subject to the strong Australia sun.... and painted Black.

Anyone else painted the car black and used these codes and products?

Cheers
Mark.

Black is Black the code shouldn't matter. Any of todays single stage urathane or base coat/clear coat products should outlast any of the original paints.

There are in fact many shades of black. When I had a partial respray recently on my black MGA - the painter managed to match the shade of black exactly - modern paint matching machine I would guess.

I thought it might be the case where not all blacks are identical.

Does anyone know if the one's quoted on that link above are indeed identical to the factory colours?

Also has anyone used PPG paints (Good or Bad experiences)?

Cheers
Mark.

I've had some work done with PPG urethanes and am quite pleased.

I've even had some areas that have been blended with the existing acrylic with great results.

Quite easy to color cut and polish. And man does that stuff take a polish.

Go for it.

If you aren't enslaved to original colors, try out a black mix that is very heavy on blue......just to the point of someone saying.....hey isn't there some blue there. The results are quite stunning.

There was a 1930's alfa at the Meadowbrook Concours with that paint and a british tan interior.....simply gorgeous.

I believe that if you check with the Dupont supplier you will find that Dupont 99 is called pitch black. I have used this on a truck and I think it is about as black as you can get. the other paint manufacture codes should all give an equivelant color. I used PPG paint on the wifes A 12 years ago and it has held up very well.
