MG MGA - paint
Getting ready to paint my MGA after 9 yrs.I need some advice on which type of paint to use, Thank-you, JOHN |
John Gordon |
I just had mine painted and used PPG paints. http://corporateportal.ppg.com/ppg/ It an acrylic base/clear Here's a pic. Cheers, Christopher ![]() |

PPG, Base color with Clear top coat. It shines more than the original paint but I like it.

Hey Ed, didn't you say you used Dodge Viper Red for your car? What year Viper color did you use? |
MGA Larry |
Larry, I used a GM color. It's called Victory Red. I have the paint code somewhere. If you want it I'll hunt it up.

I used Dupont Centari on my TD, very forgiving, very happy with the results. Marv Stuart |

I used Guard Red (A Porsche color) I used PPG Deltron BC CC. Real exspensive but you get what you pay for. i would use nothing alse for the finish. Make sure you get as much extra as you can afford of the color. I maintain almost 2 quarts and have used it for mishaps and scratches. The stuff was real easy to work with with amazing results after painting in my garage!

Bill, We used the same color, and you are right it was expensive. $700+ to cover the "A" with very little left over. Cheers, Christopher |

Thanks to all for the feedback. Your cars all look great, pictures confirm that all MGA'S are red.Mine was too,but the new color will be dark green.ACRILIC ENAMEL OR BASECOAT? JOHN |
John Gordon |
John If you use acrilic enamel add hardener to it, results in a much tuffer finish. If your not going to clear coat it at least use a single stage two part urathane. You can clear coat either of the above if you like. Otherwise go to a full basecoat/clearcoat system by any of the major suppliers, more money but you get what you pay for. If you are doing the painting talk to someone at the paint supply store. Some paint systems are easier to work with then others. I have used both PPG and Dupont with good success. |

Bill and Chris, What two red MGA's the same color. How can that be? Bet they never get parked side by side! LOL. John, What year and model is your car. Are you going to paint it resale red, or the original color? Peter. |
P. Tilbury |
Why thank you pete! Although most "A's" are Red I did add a unique feature to seperate mine from the other guy's. I used black leather piping from http://www.vintagecarparts.co.uk/en/list+~/. It really sets off the red. I also painted inside my wheel wells black wich brings out more of the beautiful curves of the fenders. Not original but a bit of what I think is a improvement. ![]() |
WMR Bill |
Bill, As some wag once wrote - at least 140% of all red MGA's made are still running! Can't see your wheel arches or seat piping, but the licence plate mounting position is interesting. Peter. |

Ever the contrarian, I went with Old English White and used a single-stage (no clear coat) polyurethane from Valspar. -John ![]() |

My car was painted with PPG Delstar paint, and I've had no trouble in six years. Picture attached...

My car is a 1961 MGA. I've done a frame-up restoration,to the best of my abilities. The first time I used Dupont acrylic MONACO RED.Looked great for 10 yrs!All the new paints on the market have made it confusing to decide. What did BARNEY use on his last yr? JOHN G. |
John Gordon |
Barney used acrylic enamel with catalyzing hardener, whatever was available at the closest paint dealer. I'd like to say whatever was cheap, but it definitely wasn't cheap, like $250/g with reducer and hardener. I don't even remember the brand name, maybe something you wouldn't recognize. I suppose I could look it up if anyone thought it was important. |
Barney Gaylord |
I used Valspar epoxy primer and PPG Deltron (I think) single stage, no clear so it's not as shiny. Car has been covered but outside in the elements for 6 years and still looks great and is easy to maintain. I used the closest dealer who happened to be very patient with me, offered easy to follow advice, didn't try to push me into buying a bunch of stuff I didn't need, and they were overall very, very helpful to some amateur who wasn't really helping that shop's bottom line too much. Oh, and they had some master paint mixer there who was a whiz at matching colors--by eye. He was cool to watch. |
Tom Baker |
Correction! I used Omni epoxy primer! Sorry for the mixup. |
