MG MGA - Paint
Just went shopping for some paint for a domestic project. Can't get my high gloss Dulux oil paint anymore due to VOC regs. Am I too late to get solvent based paint for my car? I was thinking acrylic laquer. |

Good luck with that. Been "outlawed" in most places. You're pretty much stuck with Base/Clear and, in some cases, water based. Base/clear is easy to work with just be careful of isocyanates...get a proper respirator. GTF |

Here you can still by true lacquer at Pep Boys. It is a Duplicolor product. http://www.duplicolor.com/products/psFinishSystem/ JIM in NH |

That's the colour I was intending to use! |

The problem with the Duplicolor in the tins is that apparently you are unable to have colors mixed to match existing paint or color chips. This is also apparently a movement to control these volatiles so that only "professional technicians" in controlled environments can use them. I have heard from reliable sources that some paint supply shops will not sell product to hobbyists any more. This is becoming a sore point with me as many times these so called professionals work is so bad I have to redo it myself to get a satisfactory job but we are being forced to have to accept this crap. It seems that everything we do as car enthusiasts is slowly being made so difficult to do that we end up giving up on the hobby. I'm really not sure where this will end. I have my suspicions but they are not good. SteveB |

Steve, it's not only car paints, it's a disease that is permeating governments in general, saving us from ourselves. Like I said, can't get gloss alkyd any more! I think it all started in the EPA. |

Art you are absolutely right on that. I am so fed up of not being able to get what I want because "they" decreed something either wasn't good for us or that everything has to meet new standards. So I guess we do the best we can until we end up having to use latex paint on out cars!! By the way General Paint Store still sell Alkyd enamel and may even be able to mix or tint them for you. Its available in gallon tins. SteveB |

Bryant: You can mix the Duplicolor paints to get custom colors. The problem is, it could take a lot of trial and error ($$$) to get the right color. There's a section of the Duplicolor site that shows custom mix jobs (and the combination formulas) done by customers. Be careful of the hobbyists posted mixes though. For example: how do you get medium deep blue out of a 50/50 mix of Brilliant Silver and Jet Black? I don't think so. Saw one other posted project and the hobbyist did a 50/50 mix of Deep Blue and Championship White and got what looks like a good rendition of Iris Blue. --Jack |

Has anyone used the Duplicolor "Paint Shop" laquer system? How much of their pre-mix would I need for the A ? |
Art Pearse |
Morris: I understand your explanation of Dupli-colors current system, but this still does not address the proper requirement that many of us have of having paint mixed to order or to color swatch chips based on formulas to give correct colors. If a color in the current Dupli-color range works for you and a project you are doing than that's great. However if I want a specific color because it is a restoration project or a requirement to match a existing paint color then the Dupli-color system does not offer any help. Also understand that what you can get in the USA is not always available here in Canada due to packaging requirements (English and French), metric verses your system of measurement and a whole host of other government regulations. So we are still left with the basic problem of what do we the hobbyist do now to answer our need for mixed auto paints. SteveB |

I checked at Canadian Tire. They do not have "Paint Shop" brand, but a similar stuff without much info except its a bc/cc system and not very good reviews. |

It's called Color Shop and sells for $25/L |
