MG MGA - Painting

Finally got up the courage to spray the final coat on one of the fenders. I'm very happy with the result. Trinity 1945 paint, acrylic enamel, BRG colour. But it's very messy handling the paint! It comes in gallon cans and you can't meter out of that without measuring cups dipping in it and cleaning them up is quite a chore. An endless supply of jam jars is also required for mixing etc. But it's all worth it - the end is in sight! I'm spraying in a big tent, hanging stuff from the ridgepole.

I use these, saves cleaning jam jars!

Paper cups were cool, but are extremely hard to find now - plastic ones usually dissolve. Pour your thinner in your jam jars first and slosh around = largely self cleaning and you save the paint. Save your gun cleaning thinner and use it to mix tinted primer for blocking coats, or use it in your clear if you are doing that. At the end of a whole car I usually have about 2 tablespoons of coloured thinner left.

Wow. I still have couple of tubes of graduated paper cups from my 1996 rebuild - sounds like the investment to replace the MC cap!

Made a trip to town a few months ago specifically to get paper cups for a body repair project - none to be found.

Fletcher, these plastic cups are made specifically for paint thinners and do not dissolve! That said paper cups are also readily available and slightly cheaper:

I prefer the plastic as they are stronger and easier to see the calibrations.

Good spot Neil, I had a trawl through Ebay and missed those. If they can hold Coke they can hold anything!

Ah well, one more thing to order ahead and buy from specialists, when it used to be a corner store item,
PFaaaH!

Don't (or didn't) paper cups have a wax finish to make them waterproof, and would this affect the paint?

Here's what I'm using. A very good price I think.
