MG MGA - Radiator Bolt Size

What size bolt was used for the six radiator mounting bolts on an A??

Hi Mark,

Do you have a reference that states they are cone point?
I tend to agree with you that I have always found these screws are cone point on most cars, particularly on Triumphs on which I do most work.
However, the MGA Service Parts List shows them as part number HZS0507. The BMC List of Standard Fasteners shows HZS0507 as 7/8" long, 5/16" UNF, zinc plated. Not cone pointed.

Your point (no pun intended) is well taken. The fastener references differentiate between pointed and normal shanks (viz. HPZ prefix for hex head zinc pointed, HZS for hex head zinc standard). I looked in my parts catalog and discovered that HPZ fasteners are only listed in a few places and seem to have been superseded by HZS fasteners. However, my understanding is that anywhere there was a captive nut on the car (e.g. fenders, radiator, body mounts), a cone point fastener was used regardless of part number. That is the case with the original fasteners that were on my MGA and my MGB (and the MGB uses the same part number scheme), and I've had various conversations with Todd Clarke to that effect as well. So I guess I don't know what the right answer is. Maybe someone else with a highly original car can chime in. I suspect the lads in Abingdon weren't too concerned about that sort of accuracy.

Mark, You and Todd Clarke are correct. Additionally, the boys at Abingdon would have wanted to use the cone point fasteners as the normal ones make assembly with the captive nuts a real PIA.

The bolts on my 1960 Coupe had flat ends. I purchased the car from the origional owner and had never been apart. Just some more information. Have a good day!
