MG MGA - Rallye to Reno

I have always wanted to take my A on a long trip and when I read about the Rallye to Reno, I thought what a trip. Well it sure was. I live in Pittsburgh and did not go east to go west but at this point I wish I would have. I left from Pittsburgh and caught Rt. 50 in Ohio. I made a lot of new friends and visited a lot of sites that I have never seen before. I had the usual problems, distributor cap and wires in St Louis, fuel pump in Colorado and water pump in San Francisco but I had the parts and fixed the car along the way. I would just like to thank Bruce and Dave for all the work in planing the trip. It was great.

GK,
It was definitley an incredible adventure. I did the whole trip, Ocean City to San Fransico. I've got to believe we met in San Fransico. White MGA with New York plates. There weren't that many of us. I ran with a group of 6 MGA's from Reno to San Fransisco, but didn't get all the names. I was on "Fuel Pump Row" in the garage at St Louis. There were at least 4 cars doing fuel pumps that night.
I second your thank you to Bruce and Dave.

I was in that row at St Louis and you did ride with us from Reno to San Francisco. I was the other solo driver in my red MGA I seem to remember something about going down in flames.
GK George

Ah, you met my alter ego, Pierre the Fighter Pilot!
Just curious, did you drive back to Pittburgh or ship/fly back?
Gerry

I went the easy way. ship/fly. How did your drive home work out and are you coming to Pittsburgh this week end for the Vintage Grand Prix?
GK George

The drive home went great until I broke a piston land just before I arrived in Nebraska. Still, I had a great drive through northern CA, across Oregon through Yellow Stone and Wyoming. Spectacular scenery. Got some great help and an offer to repair the motor at Rick's Foreign Car Service in Chadron NE but chose to rent truck and trailer (see photo) and tow it on home. Would never have happen if the new engine and 5 speed were in the car. A whole 'nother story.
Will not be at the VGP this weekend, although it's a great event and I hope to make it again sometime. Busy making sure I have a car ready for the Watkins Glen VGP in September.
Cheers,
Gerry

Gerry,
A friend and us were on our way home when his MGA began to lose oil pressure and started to knock just before Green River, Wyoming. His solution was the same as yours! Our MGB got backed into while waiting in line at US Customs in Detroit MI
by a huge Dodge Ram 4X4. His bumper went right over top of our bumper, and bent the hood and grille but no structural damage. The hood still opened and closed properly so we continued on. Despite these problems, The Rallye and MG 2011 was a fantastic time. I'd do it again. (but without the Ram)

Gerry, glad you made it home ok. We were in the blue from CT, next to you at the show. Good to see you again, too, George. The best part of any of these trips is the old friends you see and new ones you meet! When you went north out of Frisco, Gerry, we went south and then east across the country to Florida, then took a left back up to CT. When we hit Winchester, VA, I asked the wife if she wanted to do it again. Needless to say, we were back home on the 9th!! See you later, Marvin

Marvin Stuart

Gerry, your smiling face shows you're a happy man!

Marvin Stuart

Well it sounds like at least one of the prople driving home made it. Good to here from you Marvin.
GK George

Marvin,
Happy indeed! Thanks for the note and the picture! Please see attached. Good to hear all went well. Funny that people from CT and NY would first meet in Reno. I do agree that old and new friendship is what makes this hobby special. Great to meet you and your lovely bride.
Cheers,
Gerry

I drove 5700 miles on the Rallye to Reno in my MGA without problems. That includes Pikes Peak at 14k ft. I didn't go to SF but did do a tour of Colorado including Rocky Mountain Park at 12,000+ft on the way back.

I had a wire break on the Wiper motor but it never really rained so I didn't need it anyway. We really appreciated the zip out window on the top. It made the long days in the hot sun tolerable. My wife didn't complain too much which made it a great trip.

The R2R and MG2011 was a great experience and we met so many new friends and had great times every day. It was a trip we will never forget.

It was quite a ride, wasn't it. Marvin

Some MGAs crossing into Colorado. The Rallye was a perfect example of what MGs were made for.
