MG MGA - Rear bukhead atachment

Hey MGA folks, I am starting the resurection of a 1960 MGA. For no good reason I am proceeding back to front. The bulkhead that the spare tire, (tyre?), passes through has two attachment holes near the top. Through one hole is an allen head bolt that appears to be a # 10 or 12. The other hole is empty and the body bracket is broken off. Question: what is the correct configuration for these holes? 1/4 X 28 X 1/2"? Special head? Thanks, Tom TC 2850
Thomas McNamara

Tom, there are holes all around the spare tire opening for rivets to fix the cover. Above this are 2 slots about 1" x 1/4", with radiused edges. These are for straps to hold the tool kit. No other holes in sight on mine.
Art Pearse

Art, aren't there two clips for the knock off hammer on the right side? I seem to remember that those were bolted to the bulkhead, could that be the holes Thomas is refering to?
Bill Young

Thanks guys, I guess that I need to clearify. I recognize the holes that hold the rivets and the ones for the straps. The ones in question are those at the very top, there are 2 of them. It appears that the bulkhead is fastened to the body by 2 "L" brackets at the very top. In my case, one of the "L" brackets is broken. The other one has a hole of about 1/4" and the bulkhead has the same. Is there a special bolt or fastner that should be there? Thanks again. Tom

Just had a look at mine. Bit difficult to measure in situ. Best I can offer is a UNF hexagon headed 3/16" pointed set screw about 5/8" long. Head is in driver/passenger compartment, nut is in the boot/trunk.

THANK YOU Steve, Bill & Art. That is exactly the information that I needed. I will remove that allen head nut & bolt and put a suitable one in. Regards, Tom

The head of the bolt is 5/16, there is no washer under the head, it on the inner side of the panel. In the trunk area there is a flat washer a lock washer and a nut as pictured below. The bracket is spot welded above.

I agree. 5/16" across the flats of the head. However, I thought bolts were quoted in diameter of the threaded shaft rather than size of the head. e.g. a bolt listed as HBZ0509 is a Hexagonal head, Bolt, Zinc coated 5/16" diameter, and 9/8" long (hexagonal headed bolts are measured in eighths of an inch in length; otherwise they are measured in sixteenths of an inch in length). e.g. CPZ0412 is a Countersunk Pointed screw, Zinc coated, 4/16" diameter and 12/16" long.

Of course a bolt is called by the diameter of the shaft as you describe. I was describing what is seen when properly installed.
