MG MGA - rear fender shape

Can anyone help me with the shape of the rear fender? I am rebuilding the flange around the B pillar, and as I near the bottom, I'm not sure how it should be. See pic of work so far.

Hope this helps.

B Suelzle

That's great. How is the bottom RHS bit (as per the picture) finished? Is it turned over or flanged away from the front view?
Art Pearse

Art that bit is turned over.

Art, I would put the door on the car and then the fender to determine how far out the stepped flange that sets the fender out from the B pillar should be. It is a little over one cm generally. This is important as this will be where your door has to close to and line up with. The bottom right side in the pic. above is folded over about 1 cm. Hope this all makes sense.

Im not really certain about this but can you not buy small repair sections of your missing wing (fender) section from moss or someone like that? Im sure I have seen them advertised, maybe on e-bay or something.
It would certainly save you an awful lot of effort for you.

Art,
I have to say, there is something very odd looking about that fender. It doesn't appear at all to be a rear MGA fender. The wheel arch seems way too flat and the front section that wraps the pillar seems much too narrow.
Just curious..what happened to it?
GTF

Oh, yes, dogleg patch panels are readily available. The shape of the replacement ones is not quite correct but probably acceptable. A fairly complex shape to make from scratch...

I'm glad I'm not the only one GTF! I've been looking at that first picture from every angle and I couldn't make it an MGA rear fender either!
Lindsay Sampford

I think the "bump" is just out of shot. The picture just manages to show the "flat" part in front and below the bump. The lower flange is also filled over to complete the disguise.
Neil McGurk

You couid be right Neil, but doesn't the lower edge look long. Stick a bigger picture on Art and put me out of my misery!
Lindsay Sampford

I do believe this is what you are trying to see!!

R Garcia

It is definitely an MGA fender!! See pic. The reason the flange is in bad shape is the DPO brazed it to the B pillar (as he did other parts of the body to the chassis! So I had to cut it, not having any oxy acetylene equipment, which may not have been effective in melting the braze over a large area. So I am rebuilding the flanges (2 fenders). It is over-wide at the moment - after final welding I will trim it to width. Using 18g steel, so I have a bit of thickness to play with in final grinding. The fender as a whole is not in so bad shape as to require the repair panels, IMHO.

Art Pearse

I think it must have been an odd camera angle in your first shot, things just didn't seem to be in proportion. As you say, it does look in good shape apart from the flanges. I take it that the DPO brazed the bottom flange to the inner sill, hence the lack of bolt holes? The owner of my car did the same thing, except that he wasn't very good at brazing and it fell apart as soon as I put a chisel near it! Why do they do that when it's so easy to bolt the flange?
Lindsay Sampford

I see, said the bind man...:)
No wonder I thought the arch was too flat, not the arch at all...duhhh!
Thanks for clarifying.
