MG MGA - Rear goal post access

While changing the door buffers, I managed to loose one of the brass tapping plate that secures the buffer in place by dropping it into the rear goal post.

From recollection I don't think there is any way of retrieving it without cutting open the goal post but thought I would ask?

John, should there not be a retaining shroud (like a captive nut) to prevent this ?
Obviously not in you case.

Nope - gotta get a new one!

Hi there
Mine is steel not brass and easy to made. To prevent it next time, get some long screws and cut the heads of, two will do. Then line everything up and replace "studs" with screws.
There is no way to retrieve the plates, brass or steel, and yes there should be plate to prevent going all the way down

I thought those plates were aluminium? Both the originals and the (Todd Clarke) replacements are on mine anyway.

Blue tack and a coat hanger might work (a game of skill and luck for 1 player)

I lost the latch tapping plate in mine during restoration, but luckily with my body on a "rollover jig" (home made spit) I was able to fish it out.

When I rebuilt my B posts I welded in all 5 tapping plates in steel. They won't fall out but it was tricky getting everything lined up exactly.

Original nut plates for the door buffers were steel. Steel screws can rust in place but sometimes you can get them out with a little finesse.

I think most modern replacement parts are aluminum, which is dead wrong and a big problem. Galvanic corrosion between dissimilar materials is guaranteed to weld the screw in place so it can never be removed again. I threw out the new replacement parts and made my own from steel. See here:
