MG MGA - Rear hub nut size
The workshop manual states the nut is 1 15/16 ths inch, and this is confirmed when you measure it. Why then is the 8 sided box spanner (wrench) sold by MOSS 1 61/64 ths, ie, 1/64 th oversize? Curious, Peter. |

Dunno, never measured it. The 8 sided socket seems to fit fine, though. Also, did you know that 1 61/64 just happens to be almost exactly 50mm? Curious. |

The .016 clearance was chosen to clear the burrs raised by the DPO removing the nut with a chisel ;-) If not then I think Del's got it sussed. Bill |

Peter, If you haven't already bought the Moss wrench you might want to read Barney's page about alternatives. http://www.mgaguru.com/mgtech/tools/hub_socket.htm I used the Ford 4x4 socket he shows near the bottom of the page and it worked fine. It is much much cheaper than the Moss wrench, and you should be able to get one locally at one of the chain auto parts stores for under $20. Jeff |

I was not going to buy the MOSS wrench, but did borrow one to tighten the nuts. I was not happy with the fit, but it was adequate. I had already bought and used a 50m (3/4" drive) socket, and while this succeeded in getting the nuts undone, it would not work to tighten them sufficiently to the high torque required - a regular socket drives on the corners of the nut, and in this application one needs to drive on all 8 flats of the nut (or at least on 4 of the flats as with the FORD wrench shown on Barneys site). I may try to get one of these latter wrenches for future use. Peter. |

I went to the trouble of fabricating an octagonal wrench from 1/8" mild steel. Drilling, hacksawing and filing. It was not so much trouble. |

Peter, The Ford wrench is available from Lordco Parts for about $11. after the club discount. Beware though, It does chew up the lugs quite badly, much like the cold chisel method! Cheers, Rich |
