MG MGA - Rear Hub Nut Socket

I've just spotted this on a well known Internet auction site and thought someone here might need one...

Dave,
That one looks a bit stouter than the one sold by Moss, that I destroyed the first time I used it. It was made from a cheap metal tube that was pressed into the octagon shape.

I found that the local Autozone store will lend you a Ford 4x4 front locking hub socket kit that includes one socket that exactly fits the MGA rear axle nut.

The ruined Moss socket looks very pretty, sitting in my tool box for the last 25 years.

The key to using the Moss socket is supporting the socket with a hydraulic bottle jack near the 3/4" drive end to stop it twisting off the nut when you apply force. Damaged socket can be refaced several times with a quick skim in a lathe.

I didn't have any trouble using the Moss socket.

The Moss socket is a loose fit and soft metal. After it slips off couple of times you need to re-grind the end flat again. But it works if that's what you have in hand.
