MG MGA - rear splash plate installation

Does the flange (the part that bolts to the body) of the splash plate that's in front of the rear wheel, face the front of the car or the rear of the car?

Thanks!

George, When installed the flange and bolt heads are visible (flange pointing to rear). Attached is a picture of apparently original type guards.

If you make them with the flange towards the front i.e. opposite to original they look a lot neater but fixing the bottom screw is then more difficult..................................Mike

Thanks Mike. My problem is that I have reproduction splash plates and they are not formed at the bottom to match the inner fender lower contour. Since they can be mounted to either side of the car, and then formed to fit, I want to reproduce the original orientation of the flange before forming to the lower fender.

George,

How about a picture of the part and a vendor's name? I'm keeping tabs on what fits and what doesn't. If the part comes without the bend and curve on the bottom, it should also come with instructions for finishing the part. Otherwise, it doesn't fit (as you already discovered).

Well I don't have any pictures right now, but the three pieces I have came from Moss, one I received yesterday. They are not formed at the bottom, ie, its straight. Left to the person doing the work I guess (BTW no instructions).
Since they can be mounted on either side in this condition, I'm trying to determine "flange facing front" or "flange facing rear" before forming to match the lower inner fender.

George, The edge of the panel that is adjacent to the wing should be turned over at 90 degrees by about 1/4" (for strength) and the rubber seals are stepped to fit over this. As you can see the seals when installed the panel turnover must face the rear. This means that each panel is handed and can only go on one side.

I wouldn't worry about the bottom sections being straight as they can be easily formed to fit the curved part of the body side. However, if there are two small holes already drilled in the bottom edges it's unlikely you will get these to line up................Mike

George,

I have taken some pictures.

George,
With due respect to Mike's response the flanges on my 58 1500 coupe faced forward. I'm guessing they could be installed either way. Anybody's guess as to what is "correct" because they could be swapped side to side although I think the seals should be on the side facing the tire. That would cause the flange to face forward. I'm attaching a photo showing both the LH and RH splash plates. In the photo the one on the left is an original LH splash plate. The one on the right is a RH plate purchased from Scarborough Faire two years ago. Notice that it is (mostly) correctly formed, although the top (upper) section has been curved while the original is flat. The ones in Mike photo are also curved. The repro item had captive nuts while the original does not. This is a fairly complex shape and based on what you are saying the ones from MOSS can't be right. Send them back and buy from SF.
I had a couple lengthy conversations with Kelvin Dodd from MOSS out at MG2011. He told me he is responsible for MOSS parts quality. I told him what I thought about their quality.

Wim, thank you, those are great pics of a "flange forward" installation.

Gerry, I'm tending to agree with you, although you're also right about "could be installed either way".

Cheers, George
