MG MGA - Recoving Seats

Got the seat kit in today and I don't see that it is that hard to do. A couple of questions. I don't know where to get the stiff material in the back of the seats or the horsehair stuffing. Could I use automotive form? And what pitfalls if any should I be aware of. The shop was $485US to do it. Don't mind the money just don't see that much work.

Scarborough Faire has everything you need. I recently did a complete redo of backs and seats. Good people and good prices - I think you'll be pleased.

It's not hard. You can go to AC Moore or Michael's or some other craft store that sells picture framing supplies and buy a large piece of matte board (very stiff heavy cardboard) or even foam-core board which works great for the back board.

I used the horsehair I had (wrapped in cotton batting to keep it together) and also foam from Joanne's fabrics. Foam is expensive, and most upholsterers can still sell you horsehair or similar stuffing material.

I also added some additional lumbar support using another piece of foam at the bottom inside of the seat back.

The Moss base foam looks very nice - though I also made my own for the $$$.

Barney has a good primer on assembling the seats on his site.

And if you need to shape your foam use a electric carving knife, just don't let your better half know-

I bought my very own electric knife for $9 at Kohl's or Sears on sale - Black and Decker. Best thing ever for cutting foam, which can be a real bear with even the sharpest normal blade!

Backs are a piece of cake. Glue gun, scissors, clamps, staple gun and a thin piece of foam. My wife did one back in around about 2 and half hours. One question. The seams of the cover are not centered on the frame. The back seam rest on the frame and the padding is what is out front. Only way it goes on. Is this correct?

See the excellent step by step in Malcom Green's MGA Restoration Guide. Wonderful color photographs of the whole process.
