MG MGA - Regulator test
Is there any way to bench test the voltage regulator before installing it? |
Art Pearse |
Yes, but it is a pain. You need some special test equipment that you most likely do not have. The most practical real world test is done with the battery and running generator operational. |
Barney Gaylord |
OK, I'll just clean up the contacts and wire it up. |
Art Pearse |
Well, I got one contact to 0.0 ohms, but the other is 0.5 ohms. Anyone know what model regulator is on the A ? |
Art Pearse |
If the contacts are not 0-ohms, dress them with emery paper. |
Barney Gaylord |
Or send your regulator to Bob Jeffers and let him convert it to electronic and do away with cleaning points forever. http://wiltonae.com/articles_reviews/article_GettingAChargeOutOfIt/index.aspx |

Art, send me an e-mail and I'll send you a manual how to do it. Giovanni |

I have one of Bob Jeffers regulators installed. Wonderful. Totally stealth. I think it was around $80. I would do it again in a heartbeat. |

I see mine is a model RB106/2 but the cutout contacts don't fit the description in the Lucas manual that Giovanni sent me. They show a "Fixed contact adjureustment screw" located on top of the armature, above the bobbin. And from another source it looks like the cutout contact may need soldering in at the back if the res. is measurable. I'm still at 0.5 ohms despite cleaning with fine emery. This is going to cause a lot of heat! ![]() |
