MG MGA - Relocating to Greenville, NC
Hi, I would like to know what the process is for historic vehicles in NC since I will be relocating from NJ to Greenville, NC in the next month or so. Anyone from North Carolina been through the registration process for a MGA? Is inspection required? How does it compare to NJ? I am seeing there is a Highway User Tax and the MGA would be under the Personal Property Tax. Any info or suggestions would be appreciated!! Best regards, Michael O'Brien |

Michael, It might be most helpful for you to simply contact the folks at the North Carolina DMV. There may be variations depending on annual usage estimates. |

Michael, No inspection required and no emission requirements. You must have proof or ownership (title, etc.) and proof of insurance valid in NC. They MAY require a VIN verification inspection but I doubt it if you have title. There will be title and license fees at the DMV office. Your taxes are currently based on the valuation the DMV puts on the car and accessed by the local county. The mileage usage tax is just being considered now. Check down there in local DMV if you have questions. I have never waited more that 5 minutes in a DMV office. Jim |

There is a special historic vehicle license in NC, which does have property tax advantages, but limits your driving mainly to car shows etc. For anything other than a trailer queen you would get a normal vehicle license just like any other car. There are two special rules that apply to cars over 35 years old even with a normal license. First is that they are exempt from the normal emission and safety inspection. Second, you can use any license plate from the year of manufacture of the car as long as you carry the current license plate inside the car. |

Michael, I bet your glad to out of the high traffic state. I moved from NJ to SW Virginia 20 years ago because it was to crowded and it's a lot easier to drive your little British cars in Va and NC. Welcome to the south. David.... |
