MG MGA - Restoring

If you over-restore a car, is it really worth more than anyone else’s ?

The paintwork looks superb, but I would expect a much better restoration for that price. For a show car, the worm hose clips and painted filler cap show lack of attention to detail as does the carpeted boot. But as for totally incorrect carbs and filters...!

However, if it sells, it shows our cars values are increasing, so...good!

Nice car but he is a dreamer at that price. Some items to be picky about, but that price is even far in excess of a top quality Twin Cam.

Many contributors to this forum have shown photos of their cars that match this example, but they also know the value to be less than half that advertised in this advert.

Also the cylinder head has the patent number 565394 located by the thermostat housing.

I'm not sure if this is the original MGA 1622 head with the big '16'at the rear. It's the same head as my 1600A & some reasearch I have carried out tells me that it is from a pre 1977 MGB.

I really think it is worth about 1/2 the price. Maybe a little more. I wish it was worth his asking price though. Somebody thought it was worth close to this. The seller had it listed before and the bid got up to $46,150.00. It didn't meet the reserve. I would think he would need a lot more photos to support any bids at this level and the car should have some major historic significance. He may have paid close to that to have it checkbook restored and wants his money back.

I agree with earlier statement that a car approaching this range should be a PERFECT restoration, if there is such a thing. The liberties he has taken with the restoration are fine but should not be promoted as being "done to show quality standards using proper nuts, bolts and fasteners." This misleads the unsuspecting buyer at best.

One look under the bonnet and any self-respecting concours judge would throw that car out of the concours show. The seller has no right advertising it as "show quality standards", even if the statement was written by a professional appraiser. It doesn't even have the right carburetors and air cleaners. There are a myriad of other irregularities under the bonnet, and body paint is a non-standard color. The factory never supplied chrome wheels, let along 72 spokes, but those could be considered period accessories. All in all it looks to me more like a street rod than a concours car.

I wouldn't say double priced, but from results of some recent Barrett-Jackson auctions it looks to be about $20K overpriced. If they did get an offer for $46,150.00 and didn't take it they're nuts, no intention to sell the car, just doing a marketing exercise.
Barney Gaylord

According to an earlier post, the top bidder in the previous auction had zero feedback. Anyone else smell a rat?

Without the hype of a Barret-Jackson I think Double is about right. If you look at MGAs that have sold at B-J you will see the effect of the hype of that type of sale. Real cars that sell in the real world say this one is another $26000 fresh almost right nothing special restoration.

Guy's never sold anything on ebay before but he seems to have perfected the art of BS as far as descriptions go.... ;-)

With some work it could be a really nice car! Needing that work, it isn't worth the asking price.
