MG MGA - Scissor Hoist..Update
Mike Ellsmore started a thread on a hoist he had sourced some months ago. I took delivery of mine last week and have now installed in my garage. It is almost tailor made for the garage. Unit weighs 400kg so once down on the concrete it stays there but is so shallow it is easy to drive over. I show a pic of my car up on it below and two more pics on subsequent posts....one is a side view ..it allows approx 50mm clearance under the mga so blocks are positioned for lifting . The other pic shows the excellent underside access...

Finally the working area..very clear because of the rams being put to the sides...

Hi Neil Looks great. What additional safety features do they recommend in addition to the rams holding it up. John |

Interesting! I must've missed the previous thread. WHo is the manufacturer? |

John....it has excellent safety and does not need hydraulic power to hold an elevated position. If you look at the second image posted...side view of the hoist on the floor. ...you will see a very coarse rack just inside of the far ramp. As the car is raised this rack is engaged tooth by tooth and the car can be held safely at any intermediate height . The control box has a 'Hold! Button which releases ram pressure and fully loads up the rack . There are two of these racks ..one on each side. To lower the hoist there are two small air actuators needing about 60 psi air which disengage the racks. The car stays up safely with all power turned off....I have left the mga on it overnight. Clearance under the car is approx 1 meter and just right for a low 30 cm high stool....quite comfortable and a pleasant change from the back squirming under axle stands. The two cross bars are connected to the ram/scissor/rack mechanisms and rotate . Andy..made in China like everything now ...and by a company called Big Red... They make a wide variety if garage kit. Here in Oz it cost A$1950 ...about Us $ 2000. ...very reasonable |

Or search Archives with words "Ultimate" and "Hoist" if the link above doesn't work. Mike |

Trying again to upload image. Help? Anyone know max size for image as mine is too large? I can then reformat without taking all way down to VGA and loosing detail. |

I usually target around 500kb and use jpg format... |

Gerry, Try this link as it is the master company in China. There is a Contact Us link on the Home page - also I see their main base on your side of pond is in Ontario - are you still on speaking terms with our cousins up there? http://www.tongrunjacks.com/products.php#18_0_145__913 Mike |

PM One trick for uploading large photos that I use and is now being used by a number of others, is to insert the high resolution photo into a blank PowerPoint page. This also gives you the opportunity to put 2 or 3 photos on the same page and even add words and arrrrows etc. The clever bit is then to use the drop down menu on the 'Save As' window and select 'JPEG File Interchange Format' (See attached photo that I have done that way). This saves the PowerPoint page as a JPEG image that is the right size for uploading here. Steve ![]() |

An example of Steve's suggestion - pick the difference! Mike ![]() |

Mike...a cautionary note re operation of the hoist..not mentioned in the useless manual. With the hoist elevated and you wish to lower...then when you first press the Down button the hoist RAISES the car before lowering ..this, I presume, is to unload the safety racks and allow the air actuators to lift the engagment pins. The hoist seemed to lift up about 4cm.I have a normal ceiling height in my garage ( below my lounge room ) and the mga is well clear of the ceilng even at max height. When I put my 74 Jeep with 31in wheels on it the first time however I made the mistake of lifting it to just under the ceiling .....I now have a severely indented garage ceiling . Luckily it did not get under a joist or.....it is a powerful beastie. |

Neil, I think you can reduce the amount of upward motion before it descends by adjusting the timer in the control box. Two of us picked up our hoists yesterday - still commissioning - a couple of minor bugs due to slight damage during transportation from China! Regards Mike |
