MG MGA - Screen Washer Pump
This “Lucas” pump is the third fitted in 3 years. Each fitted and tested in the winter following the failure on first use of the previous one. Does anyone please know of an alternative pump that works? Thanks for your help. Cheers Dave

| "Yes, they all do that Sir" The clues are the green box and the label "Lucas" A generally recommended pump was ... HELLA 8TW 004 223-031 but ... it doesn't appear to be available anymore, or not when I last looked. So, I'll add to Dave's request - does anybody know another ? Jim |

Hi Jim Thanks for your input. I have searched and will buy a Febi Bilstein 14877, unless anyone advises against. It is made in Germany so has a head start over the Chinese opposition. Any comments or other suggestions, anyone? Cheers Dave |

| Happy New Year The Febi Billstein pump arrived. It has 2 nozzles, one marked B and the other marked D. I have looked up likely German words for Suction and Discharge but no matches for B and D. Does anyone please have a match for B and D to suction/discharge. Thanks for your help Cheers Dave |

| Maybe ... Bucht : Inlet Druck : Pressure How are the sizes for the connections ? The pump I mentioned was one we have used on MGBs, with different in/out pipe sizes. I think the MGA also had different in/out sizes, but after 60 odd years who knows what a particular car has. Cheers, Jim |

| Hi Jim
Thanks for your response. The nozzles are 6mm OD and would probably take a 5mm ID tube, The nozzle nearer the camera has a barb and is marked D, the barb would make sense for the pressure side. The pump is the 14877 and is a solid piece of kit weighing 180g. It’s £15.80 from Amazon, cheaper than the make believe Lucas offering. I did look for your suggested Hella pump but nothing came up. The terminations are cylindrical, about 3mm dia and intended for a push-on plug. Perhaps I can squeeze bullet connector sleeves to suit or make other push-on connectors from my scraps bin. The bracket is a bit clunky, the previous Lucas pumps were attached to the side of the air exhaust duct and I will have to think again about a mounting. I will post again when it’s fitted and working. Too damn cold to do it now. Cheers Dave

| It is worth reminding UK owners that windscreen washers are compulsory on our cars even though they were not original equipment. (You can get round this by not having a full windscreen or having an opening one.) Not having washers is an MOT failure item though not all testers seem to bother. I think the only other retrospective fitment, which doesn't concern us as MGAs have them, is having rear reflectors. I think they became compulsory on new cars in 1934 but don't quote me on that date. |

| likely not B & D but E & D E = Einlass = Inlet D = Druck = Pressure Bucht is an inlet in the context of a bay or a river |

| Hi Dominic
Thanks for confirming that D=Druk. B remains a mystery. These stampings are made twice in the mounting bracket, I would have thought it would be cheaper, and certainly more helpful, to mould direction arrows onto the plastic case. I have thought about the electrical connections, which have + & - moulded onto the plastic casing. Amazingly in these days of metrication, the pins are 0.125” and not 3mm as I would have expected. I drilled a spare bullet 0.125 and that was a nice push fit onto the pin, and pushed on the connector. Thanks to everyone for their comments. Shame the pictures are upside down. Cheers Dave

The Febi screen washer pump is fitted and working well, very powerful. The pump nozzles need 5.5mm ID tube. Cheers Dave
