MG MGA - seats question

Hi all
The seatbase on an MGA is held in place on the seat frame with 3 wooden blocks. One in front and two at the sides.
The one at the front touches the front tube from the frame prevening the seat from moving forward on the frame. But, the two at the sides seems to be placed in the U formed pieces from the frame(the U formed pieces wich hold the rails.I would have expected that the blocks should touch the side tubes and so preventing the seatbase moving left or right.
When I put the old seatbase on the frame I can move the seatbase left or right because the wooden pieces are so worn out that they don't touch the U shaped metal from the frame. And I think that is normal because even when they are new the wooden blocks only touches the metal a few millimeters.
At the moment I am making two new wooden seatbottoms and I tend to place the two wooden blocks on the sides against the side tubes from the frame.
The seats from the car that I am restoring are completely dismanteled and I don't know if everything on them is original.
So is there someone who can give me some advice or post a foto.
Thanks,
Herman,
H. Jorens

hi

Here i a picture of the seatframe and the parts

Herman,
You are right, the two side blocks are fixed to sit against the inside of the tubes. Set them tight enough to take away any sideways movements whilst also letting you lift the cushion out if required.

The rear two blocks do sit on the parallel channels, not against the side tubing. When the seat cushion is fully assembled the back end of the cushion will be trapped (located) between the uprights where the backrest attaches to the base frame. Tail of the cushion is also held down by bottom of the backrest. For the wood block position, see here:

Hi there
As far as I know the three wood pieces have nothing to do with mounting the seat. They are there to provide place to attach (staple to) backrest cover material. If you look at the bottom of backrest frame you will see holes for sheet metal screws to attach wood pieces to. The straight piece of wood,in your picture, shall be located between the curved pieces not forward as shown.

You're right Martin but the seat locating blocks are not shown in Serge's picture.

Herman, If you are making the wooden seat bases yourself take care when cutting out the square hole for the screen because if it's just a bit oversize you won't have enough land on the base on which to fix the outer side blocks. As you can see from mine the left block is right against the hole and there is less than a half inch on the other side on which to staple the turned over seat leather. I think it would be best to leave cutting the hole until you've fixed the blocks.

Another point is that because the rear sides of the base wood are shaped there is no support for it from the tubular base frame in these parts (around 5 inches in length) other than the blocks themselves. So take care in getting the block thickness correct so they will rest on the channel bottoms. The channel width is 1" and the block width 7/8"............Mike
