MG MGA - Self destructing coil

Put a brand new Lucas Sport Coil in my car. After 4 weeks and about 300 miles, it self destructed this morning a few seconds after starting up the car. See photo for what I found when I opened the bonnet.

Andy,

At least you could immediately see what was wrong. I had a similar experience with a sport coil last fall, but mine just up and quit on the freeway. Moss replaced it without question. Now I carry an ancient Lucas coil as a spare.

I am also planning to move mine from the generator to the 1600 mounting bracket.

When will we be able to get good electrical components again? Come back (old) Lucas, all is forgiven!

Are these coils marked with the Lucas logo and "DLB 105" realy Lucas Sport Coils made by Lucas or are they a Chinese copy or something. I bought one exactly like Andy's about six weeks ago, it's still working ok but I am now wondering how much longer it will work for! I am sure I have seen another picture similar to Andy's but can't remember where or whether it was a sport coil. Definitely going to put my old coil in the boot!

That's tough Andy - yes there was a photo of someone's exploded coil a few months ago - put the old scruffy one back. I have a new sports coil not fitted yet ( off ebay) beginning to wonder whether to bother now - many copy parts are failing (rotors, capacitors, points etc) - as you say Neil good old Lucas - prince of darkness.

Mine also failed the same way only over a longer period. The oil leaked out slowly over several months. The result was it would get over heated after several minutes into my drive and could not be re-started until it finally cooled. It was not until it popped that I was able to solve the problem. Go with the epoxy sealed unit from Petronix along with there electronic points. I would never go with anything different.
