MG MGA - Shelley Jack LJ225 Handle

I seem to have conflicting data in my Shelley Jack data base for the handle of the original MGA/Healey LJ225 - the one without the reinforced yoke.

Barney notes that it is 13" long with a 45 degree bend and then another 1.5"

The Healey Owners Club has just told me that it is an 18" straight bar.

I have another input that says it is a 12" straight bar.

It is of course possible that all variations are correct. However, as the Healey and MGA shared the same production line and logistics supply at Abingdon, my gut feeling says that the same jack handle went with both cars.

Is there anyone out there with the guaranteed original kit who can enlighten me?

Steve, I think I can answer this one!

I do not have a guaranteed original, but I do have a copy of October 1961 "Car& Driver" "Road Research Report: MGA 1600 MK II"

The article includes a photograph showing the jack and handle together with the lug wrench (wheel brace) and hub cap puller.

The handle shown is straight and appears to be a good 18" long.

Just my luck, the two LJ225 jacks I have both have handles that I suspect are NOT original (not identical even) and are 12" long

I imagine the bent handle one is for the 225 with downward pointing yoke as it would be necessary for that one.

Hi Gordon. Welcome back - the lure of tools trapped you!!

The evidence so far is pointing to an 18" straight bar.

Any more offers from anyone else?

My Jack handle is about the same length as the starter handle, with a bulbous end where it goes into the jack, and a loop for a wooden handle at the other.
dominic clancy

Dominic, that's for the earlier jacks, which are operated by twisting the handle.

The LJ225 is operated by a side to side movement. The handle is a plain round section bar, as in Gordon's picture.

Hi Steve -I assume you have seen the Shelley jack handle on ebay - it's only got a few hours to go and is at £56 - listing number 120514273536 - cheers Cam

It's a standard cross-section handle for many Shelley DL and LJ jacks but not the 225 series.
