MG MGA - Smooth Front Valance installation?
I checked the archives and could not find an answer for this. When installing a smooth front valance what happens with the frame extension? Is it just removed or are the bumper mounts cut off? If the extension is removed, how is the horn mounted? Any other tips? Tx Gerry |

The front frame extension supports the front end of the body, so not good to remove it. Looks like you would have to cut off the two long studs that extend forward to hold the bumper, or bore holes in the valance to allow the studs to pass through. |

Gerry, Two of the outer bolts come off. The inner ones as barney rightly says are part of the front extension and have to be cut off. Unless you go racing when they make good toe points.... http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/hesterracing/YD3801/YD3_801_Northam_April_2007.jpg Note the cracked valance, from reversing... as they body was not on the chassis exactly straight. I'm curious why so many go with the bolt on as shown. Well I guess it makes a conversion back again easier, but as I've been toying with the idea of doing this, I'm inclined to weld on extentions to each fender and the body tub and extend the beading down the entire front. I just seems to look more natural that way. Thoughts? |

My friend is considering this mod just for the look, so he doesn't want the bumper mounts sticking thru the valance. I hate the thought of hacking up a perfectly good extension..even though I know the studs could be welded back on. To T. McCarthy: Given the complex shape of the valance I'm thinking what you're suggesting would be a pretty difficult job. Cheers, Gerry |

On my brothers car, we made some 6 inch long adapters and connected an overrider to each of the chassis extensions, then got them chromed.... It looked quite cool. don't have a photo unfortunatly. Cheers Mark. |

Gerry, most go with the one piece bolt on because the valances available are either in fiberglass or aluminum and don't lend themselves well to a three piece installation. I also prefer that look, but it takes some body work to create either a new valance or at least the panels that would fill the original bumper mount area and flush it with the front of the body. That's what I'm doing with my car. I'm still working the various pieces with the English wheel and hammers, but this will give you the idea how I'm building them.
