MG MGA - Spaer wheel clamp. Photo & parts reqd

For some reason i have no spare wheel clamp on my MGA.
There are no bolt holes on the floor, has it never been fitted? How is it fitted? Bolted or welded?
Can somebody post up a photo of its position and also the anti rattle felts position that are glued to the floor?
Before i order one from Moss has anybody got a spare one knocking about?

Thanks Roy

There are two pieces of sheet bent to form a "U" shape bracket in the middle to hold the pivot pin. These are spot welded through the boot floor to a stiffener plate underneath. A split pin passes through one of the brackets (they both have the hole) to secure the pivot pin. The pin secures an eye bolt that the clamp fits onto, which is in turn secured by a wing nut.

If no-one else has to hand I will take some pictures and measurements and post later

Forgot to ask, is your car a roadster or coupe? If coupe, does the wheel fit through the bulkhead?
N McGurk

Hi, Its a roadster . No bracket on the floor or signs of ever one being there . Hard to see from the Moss catalogue but i think the floor bracket is not shown.

Does this help?

I couldn't fine any replacements listed by Moss or Todd Clarke but the brackets don't look like they'd be too hard to fabricate. You can get the pin and bolt from Moss and fit the brackets to them, then spot or plug weld them in place.

The location is probably not critical, but you'd need all of the parts (clamp, wing nut, bolt and pin) to properly fit it with the spare in place.

Todd Clarke sells the felt pads which are glued to the boot floor (see pic.)....................Mike

Mike, that's a nice looking boot floor!

Thanks Larry - it's only recently been painted. I'm sure it won't stay like that for long ..................Mike

Roy,

I just found that I have all the necessary bits among my spares. Including boot floor with spot welded stiffener and "u" brackets, pin, I-bolt, wing nut and clamp. Let me know if you are interested.

I found that I have two identical wing nuts, one in brass and one in steel. I have only seen steel ones before. My question to anyone reading this is; were the early nuts brass (I know the later ones were definitely steel) or is this a reproduction part? The reason I ask is that it is identical and seems too nice quality for repro.

I lost the pin and bolt for the clamp from mine when I had the body chemically cleaned and de-rusted. Very annoying! The Moss pin does drop out too. Now I can see what was missing from mine and why the Moss part is sub-standard. Andre's picture and I think Mike's show a split pin in a cross drilled pin. The Moss part doesn't have the cross drill.

Neil I would be interested in your cross pin and I bolt. Its not that it isn't easy to cross drill the Moss part but I think the Moss pin is a smaller diameter than the original and I really like original bits (bit sad really). One job still to do is restore my interior mirror.

Part number AHH5351. There was never any change of part number through all of MGA production. That doesn't mean it couldn't have changed material along the way without changing part number. Does anyone have a MG TD SPL?
Barney Gaylord

Hi Neil? Yes would be most interested in the parts you have, sounds like you have everything i need. Can you email me on carmadroy at Yahoo dot co dot uk.

Thanks Roy
