MG MGA - Spare Tire Clamping Plate

Greetings,

By chance does anyone out there have both styles of spare tire clamping plates? There was one version used on most all MGA's and a shorter one used in the 1600 coupes. How about a comparison i.e., length.
Thanks!

Just hated seeing my inquiry drop so far on the BBS without a response so I thought I'd bump it back up in hopes someone might be able to provide the information requested. Cheers!

Robert,
I have seen pictures of the Coupe clamp somewhere but I don't remember where. Check the archives here or other sites. There are different clamps but I can't tell you the dimensions.

There is a picture of both types on page 32 in Clausagers Original MGA. Unfortunately no measurements are provided.

Rob, To get you going the common one is exactly 8" in length. The width at the hole end is 2" and, with the flange, at the 'tyre' end it is 3" : all nice round numbers. You'll need someone else to do the coupe clamp. mike
PS I've just seen the Clausager pictures and there seem to be two different designs for the longer one. The one I have (see page 33) has the metal (hole end) folded around to the back and welded to the sides whereas the one on page 32 at the bottom is a straightforward punched item with no welding. Also the first version has a 1.625" square reinforcing plate around the hole spotwelded in place. So Clausager may not be correct in saying there was only one type for all roadsters.

Robert,
My coupe has the 8" long clamp as does my 62 roadster. I am not sure if they are origional but I got my coupe from the origional owner and it was unmolested. Have a good day!

The shorter coupe part is only for the last coupes where the tire did not poke forward into the passenger area. Most were just like the roadster.

R.J.,

Correct. The clamping plate also attaches at the rearmost center of the trunk area and not to the floor pan itself which is another reason a shorter version is necessary.
