MG MGA - spare tire cover question

Hi I have a 1500 roadster. The spare tire cover is made of carpet, and vinyl. The carpet part extends through the bulkhead as a semi circular piece of carpet that covers the tire. It attaches to the rear bulkhead with rivets. The vinyl part inside the trunk lifts up in order to access the spare tire. Is the 1600 coupe and MKII coupe tire cover different? If so, how is it different? Is the 1600 Coupe and MKII coupe spare tire cover simply a circular piece of carpeting that drapes over and around the spare tire? thanks, Glenn

The 1600 coupe does not have the aperture in the rear bulkhead, the spare wheel sits wholly in the trunk (boot) and has a circular grey Furflex cover.

Thanks Barry that answered my question! Cheers, Glenn

Barry, I assume that you meant to type Hardura, not Furflex?

While we are on the subject, does anyone know of a source for these with the original grey pattern? Or does anyone have an original roadster one they would swap for a late coupe one?
Neil McGurk

Neil, I am not really familiar with Hardura although I have heard of it. The material concerned was marketed here in OZ as Furflex (used for tool bags for MGA's and MGB's, although black was used for tool bags). It had a vynil-type finish but originally had a jute-felt backing (ie the inner part of tool bags), later a flock-type backing. Perhaps Hardura and Furflex are the same?
Barry Bahnisch

Neil, I took a sample of the original 'dark grey with white spots' hardura to Segal and Martrim to see if they could match it with no luck. Also Woolies could give no possible source. The main man at Martrim, who was clearly very experienced, said that he had been asked by overseas customers whether he could get hold of it. I think he said they used the same on Jaguars of the same period.
I had been planning to make up a wheel cover to match the original but I found that in order to cut out, in one piece, the long circumferencial piece I would need to buy four times the area of hardura I needed and it made the cover a bit expensive. I've not completely given up the idea and selling the three spares on Ebay! Of the three or four types of Hardura I've seen so far I probably would go for the Woolies grey one.................Mike
