MG MGA - Spare tyre fitting of
G/day all, My MGA took the spare tyre out today for the first time, I notices the Carpet piece attached to the actual tyre cover was pushed back into space where the battery goes, what is that all about , should there be a panel of some sort, something to stop that happening. can someone advise me on this please and maybe a photo as well as I don't have a manual. Thanks George |

George If you read the page on this link it should explain your question: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/interior/int100c.htm The link is to a specific page on Barney Gaylord's MGA technical site. As you don't have any manuals you could well use his many hundreds of pages as your first port of call on all issues. It all starts here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/ Cheers Steve |

Thanks Steve, but still can’t get my head around it, I just can’t imagine the carpet ,which fits at the rear of the spare wheel, just sits out in the space of the battery compartment exposed to the elements Regards |

Got that last post wrong I now realise that the carpet on the rear of the spare tyre just sits on top of the battery cover |

George,
Unless you have a 1600 or MKII Coupe, the spare tire extends partially into the passenger compartment. The spare tire cover is made up of two types of material. The front part that extends into the passenger compartment is carpet . The carpet is sewn to the Hardura (original material) spare tire cover that is in the boot. The unit of both of these materials is attached to the rear bulk head opening with rivets and a fiberboard surround. The later Coupes’ Spare tire fits completely inside the boot. Jim ![]() |

Here’s my Hardura cover in the boot. I was able to use the original. Jim ![]() |
