MG MGA - Spare Wheel Clamp Bracket
Hi, Just wonder if someone could post an image of the location of the bracket/swivel bolt, for the spare wheel clamp on a 1600 coupe. I have Original MGA and know its at the center rear of the boot. Just like to confirm exact position. Many thanks. Henry |

If the coupe is like the roadster there will be a reinforcing patch underneath the boot floor where the clamp bracket is fixed. From memory, on mine, this was a 2-3" square of sheet spot welded to the underside. The centre of this patch will be your bracket fixing point......................Mike |

Thanks Mike. I suspect my car has had a new panel welded in, so original location not easy to establish. A PO has fixed the bracket, but clearly not in the correct position. A photo showing the bracket in place would be great. Original MGA shows the clamp but location of bracket is not clear. It seems to sit above the floor. The repro clamp I have is 8" long. I suspect this is a roadster clamp? What is the length of a coupe clamp? Reading various posts the roadster clamp can be modified by shortening and elongating the hole. Any help appreciated. Regards Henry |

Thanks Barney. So you just cut the heel off, and elongate hole. Just want a photo of bracket position. Regards Henry |

Hi Henry The clamp position on a 1600 coupe is diferent from the 1500 Coupe, and Roadsters. This is because the spare sits further back in the 1600 (does not protrude into the cockpit space) if you can wait a week I can post a photo from my 1600 Coupe, which i keep on the farm. Cheers John |

Thanks John, I can wait a week. That would be fantastic. The photo in Original MGA is not clear on the clamp bracket position. It seems to sit above the floor on a plinth, but cannot really see. Regards Henry |

Found a picture of my coupe boot taken while in mid restoration - it shows what the retainer bolt attaches to etc. Hope that helps. http://www.rhodo.citymax.com/i/non-rhodo/mg7.jpg |

Thanks Bill. That's starting to show the detail I was looking for. Its seems I have that little protrusion missing. Perhaps omitted by previous restorer. Hopefully John's photos can give a bit more detail. Regards Henry |

Wow. Thanks Gary. This explains a lot. Never seen pictures of this detail before. I am missing that little plinth welded to back strengthener. Is this the original setup. Can that little plinth be purchased in the UK. Or make one up. Many Thanks. Henry |

Your welcome Henry. Everything is original except the black clamp. I still think thats some pretty crude welding |

That was why I asked if it was original. The welding is rough. As a guess the plinth depth looks about 2 x the depth of the U bend on the bracket. Thanks again. |

Hi Henry Apologies-Urgent personal matters came up. looks like you have excellent photos from Gary. If you need more or measurements I will be back at the farm next week regards John |

Thanks for your assistance John. I think from Gary's photos I can scale up a template to replicate in steel. Thanks. |
