MG MGA - Spare Wheel Clamp Pivot - AHH5350

Twice now I've ordered this part from MOSS UK.

They supply a pin half the correct length and without the split pin hole.

Could someone send me a photo of the original, so I can send them a photo. With a ruler or tape measure in the photo please?

Also what's the diameter of the pin also please?

Then I will tell MOSS once again to review this item.

Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark,

can't do a photo at the moment, but if they yo;re having trouble, try Sportscar Metalworks. I've always found Mick to be very helpful and the parts correct and of a great quality.

Best regards,

Grant :-)

The hinge pin is 2" long by 1/4" diameter. On mine there was only one hole in the pin whereas there is a hole at each end of the corresponding bracket ends. There were probably two holes in the pin on earlier cars but as lining up the pin holes with the bracket holes is a pain I can understand why they dropped one. The split pin is 3/32 or 1/8" and the pin hole is about 1/2" from the end............................Mike

See attached photo which is no where near 2" long.
all I can think is that fitting a split pin either side of this short pin would lock it in place but this is hardly a replacement for the original item.

I have asked Moss to review.

Thanks for your help Mike.

I would like to supply a photo of the original part please?

As Moss are saying they have supplied the short pin since 1991.

I've seen an MGB with boot lid ripped off where the spare wheel got loose in an accident, so keen to avoid this.

"As Moss are saying they have supplied the short pin since 1991."
Typical reply - what they don't say is that people complain and they trot out the same statement - buyer then bins the part.
I got mine from Bob West.

I had the same problem with the pin from Moss USA. I ended up making my own from 1/4" rod stock. Cut to length, drill a hole where the pin goes through and Bob's your uncle!
Larry Wheeler

The hinge pin is 1/4" dia, 2" long, with one 5/32" dia cross drilled hole 13/32" from one end. The welded bracket on boot floor appears to have been made from two identical formed straps with the through hole, welded separately in alignment with a fixed space in between. It is therefore a coincidence that both sides of the welded bracket have a cross hole when only one split pin is used. You can then install the hinge pin either end around.

The short Moss pin is definitely wrong. The only way to use it is to sandwich it between two split pins that will bear against the ends of the hinge pin. This leaves the hinge pin supported (or held down in this case) by less than 1/2 the width of each floor bracket. The spot welded joint between these loop straps and the boot floor is a common rust failure point. so strength of the joint is significantly compromised by the short hinge pin.

Sorry for the typo. The cross drilled hole is 3/32 (0.094) inch diameter, while the split pin is 0.090 inch diameter. Does anyone know if the Moss Motors USA part number 543-025 has the same issue?
Barney Gaylord

Barney, did you mean 453-025? If so, yes, that was the pin I bought (Moss USA) and it has exactly the problem describes.
Larry Wheeler

Yea, 453-025. (Did I get it right this time)? I have posted a Faulty Parts page for this item, and I have notified Moss USA. It seems like a trivial thing, but if it has been around for more than 20 years it is because people don't return the cheap part.

Finally got a photo

Small part but big problem if the spare wheels gets loose over a speed hump, etc

Thanks
Mark
